Responsibilities

Functions as member of the multidisciplinary treatment team.

Supervision of lower‑level clinical staff.

Provides individual and group therapy and facilitates a variety of clinical activities including facilitating recreational activities as needed.

Utilizes evidence‑based practices to provide therapeutic intervention for individuals with co‑occurring mental health and substance use disorders.

Screens and assesses patients for co‑occurring mental health disorders.

Works in conjunction with the psychiatric prescribers to provide additional mental health services and supports for patients who are dealing with co‑occurring mental health issues.

Performs lectures, videos, psycho‑educational groups, and specialty groups.

Functions as a primary counselor, managing all facets of clinical services to patient caseload.

Intervenes when patients are in crisis and utilizes clinical skills to problem‑solve.

Provides orientation to the clients regarding the nature of the treatment facility, including its programs, activities, policies, and rules.

Transports patients as needed using NYS vehicle.

Interviews patients to complete various assessments; keeps clinical record in accordance with McPike ATC operating practices; involves patient in the formation of the treatment plan; and monitors patients' compliance with treatment goals.

Completes forms, documents, and records efficiently, including discharge planning, while adhering to all applicable confidentiality regulations.

Provides or coordinates all facets of patients’ care.

Participates in activities to improve patient care and facility operations.

Maintains relationships with vocational, educational, social services, probation, parole, referral agencies, and other community agencies associated with patient rehabilitation to ensure continuity of services.

Authors procedurally correct patient records, including justification for continued stay and progress toward meeting treatment goals.

Competent daily use of a computer for patient record documentation and other required communication.

Admission determination, admission interviews, outreach activities, scheduling, etc.

Communicates with insurance companies to obtain both pre‑authorizations and concurrent reviews to obtain payment for treatment.

May perform other job‑related duties.

Minimum Qualifications Possession of a license and current registration as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in New York State.

Candidate(s) must be eligible and maintain eligibility for full and unconditional participation in the Medicaid and Medicare programs. Failure to maintain eligibility will result in termination of employment.

Mandatory overtime is required. The role is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the program, the title may be filled via a non‑competitive appointment. No examination is required, but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications.

In May 2024, if a temporary NY HELPS employee is satisfactorily performing, the appointment will change to permanent non‑competitive and the official probationary period will begin.

Within one year of permanent appointment, it is expected that employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non‑competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without needing to compete in an examination.

Additional Comments The salary range listed in this posting reflects the full range for this graded position, factoring in annual performance advances based on satisfactory annual performance reviews. Candidates with no previous State service will begin at the hiring rate (starting rate of the salary range) listed above, plus any applicable Location Pay/Geographic Pay/Shift Pay differentials.

Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
