Job Summary The Nurse Extern is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care for an identified group of patients in an assigned patient care area under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. Other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care for an identified patient group.

Conduct patient assessments, gather history, develop care plans, and document in medical records.

Perform patient care procedures and techniques under RN supervision.

Administer medications as part of clinical training.

Qualifications

Currently enrolled in an accredited School of Nursing, or graduate and ready to take the NCLEX, or awaiting retake.

Minimum clinical experience:

For 4‑year programs: at least two acute care medical‑surgical rotations, or one medical‑surgical and one pertinent rotation.

For 2‑year or accelerated programs: at least one medical‑surgical rotation and/or pertinent work experience, with at least one rotation including medication administration.

Six months or more as a nursing assistant preferred.

Basic patient care skills: reading, writing, basic arithmetic, following directions, interpersonal skills.

Physical ability to stand/walk up to 80% of shift, lift and position patients 20% of shift.

Licensure & Certifications State of Wisconsin Nursing Assistant Certification preferred. Must provide documentation from an accredited school indicating completion of the basic nursing course meeting Wisconsin code. American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) or equivalent required within 90 days of hire.
