Job Overview

The Respiratory Therapist is responsible for providing diagnostic and therapeutic services as prescribed by a physician, following defined treatment protocols according to department policies. The role includes collecting, assessing, interpreting, and intervening in the care of neonatal, pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients, ensuring patient welfare and safety standards during treatments. Responsibilities

Assess patient needs and identify expected outcomes. Assess patient condition (BP, temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, rhythm interpretation, lung sounds). Analyze data to identify needs and potential risks. Involve the patient, family, and other health‑care team members in gathering data. Identify outcomes that are age‑appropriate, culturally appropriate, realistic, and attainable. Validate outcomes with patient, family, and other health team members. Document data and identified outcomes. Implement respiratory interventions based on the plan of care. Assist in determining an appropriate care plan. Provide care according to the plan and in accordance with all relevant policies, procedures, and practice guidelines in conjunction with other care team members. Collaborate, consult, or make referrals if unable to perform safely and independently. Ensure all actions are based on scientific, ethical, or ecological principles; proven effectiveness; past experience; practice standards; patient/family requests and values; or legal parameters. Document interventions according to practice guidelines. Respond appropriately to emergent situations. Evaluate care and the patient’s response to interventions and expected outcomes. Systematically and continuously evaluate patient progress, reporting abnormalities to the responsible RN. Report all variances in procedure to the supervisor/manager. Report to the charge nurse with variances in each nursing unit. Modify interventions based on patient response and changing conditions. Involve the patient, family, and other health team members in evaluating care. Use ongoing assessment data to revise patient needs, priority problems, outcomes, and the plan of care. Deliver care as delegated by physician/authorized practitioner to an assigned patient population or individual patient within the guidelines of the Respiratory Scope of Practice. Use communication strategies to achieve desirable outcomes. Contact physician for additional information when orders are incomplete. Communicate verbal and written information clearly, concisely, accurately, and timely. Use communication strategies appropriate to patient/family needs for information and support. Communicate effectively with all members of the health‑care team. Operate and maintain all respiratory care equipment. Perform routine maintenance, repair, and cleaning of equipment. Prepare equipment. Maintain appropriate respiratory care equipment stock levels and ordering mechanisms. Practice and maintain all pertinent NFPA and JCAHO standards for safe handling of respiratory care equipment. Make rounds on all patients receiving respiratory care to ensure proper equipment operation in patient safety and acceptance. Required Qualifications

A.A./A.S. in Respiratory Care/Therapy or related field. Respiratory Therapist License issued by the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice. Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) issued by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC). Exceptions:

New graduates must complete their Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) within 6 months of hire. Those with Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) issued by the NBRC must have 3 or more years of respiratory therapist experience in a clinical setting. Respiratory therapists working at M Health Fairview Facilities – supplemented by a defined contract staffing agency – temporary.

Basic Life Support (American Heart Association or Red Cross). Neonatal Resuscitation Program (American Heart Association) at Lakes, Northland, Ridges, UMMCH, Southdale, Woodwinds and St. Johns within 180 days. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (American Heart Association) at Lakes, Northland, Ridges and UMMCH within 180 days. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (American Heart Association) at Lakes, Northland, Ridges, Southdale, Woodwinds, St. Johns, Bethesda and UMMC within 180 days. Preferred Qualifications

B.S./B.A. in Respiratory Care/Therapy or related field. 1 year of respiratory therapy experience in a clinical setting. Benefit Overview
