Position Summary This employee has the responsibility for coordination of total resident care. The Nursing Supervisor performs supervisory and professional duties in directing and coordinating all nursing units. The individual must have advanced training and broad nursing experience including supervisory duties. The work requires administrative ability, knowledge of training techniques, ability to adapt procedures in unusual situations, and initiative and good judgment. Work is carried out according to standards of professional nursing practices, facility policies, rules and regulations, and State and Federal regulations.
Responsibilities / Accountabilities
Verifies daily staffing and redistribution, as necessary.
Collaborates with all charge nurses daily to exchange information regarding resident care, condition, and all matters affecting resident well‑being (i.e., admissions, discharges, transfers, moves within the building), makes recommendations regarding nursing process, and communicates concerns to supervisors of other departments.
Makes rounds, morning and night, as time allows, to assess residents’ condition, giving special attention to critically ill residents.
Ensures that the individual nursing care plan is followed for each resident.
Performs medication passes and/or direct resident care as needed.
Participates in resident care committee meetings.
Reinforces the training and orientation of nursing personnel and provides positive reinforcement.
Answers any/all emergencies throughout the shift (i.e., change of resident condition or pronouncement of death).
Assists in assuring a safe and sanitary environment for residents, employees, and visitors.
Assures that the building is secure during the evening and night hours by checking doors and alarms according to nursing facility protocols.
Reviews incident and investigative reports for accuracy and completeness.
Monitors meal service on the units and in the dining areas to identify issues requiring intervention and to assure resident meal satisfaction and nutritional adequacy.
Assists in development and implementation of nursing facility Quality Improvement Program.
Ensures that residents and families receive the highest quality of service in a caring and compassionate atmosphere which recognizes the individuals’ needs and rights.
Performs other duties as requested.
Specific Educational / Vocational Requirements
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and current registration with the state board of nursing.
Experience in the nursing field.
Supervisory experience in long‑term care is required.
Job Skills
Thorough knowledge of nursing theory, techniques and practices.
Thorough knowledge of specialized procedures and equipment applied to the area assigned.
Knowledge of dietetics, sanitation, and personal hygiene.
Knowledge of medications, dosage, and expected results.
Skill in handling and manipulating instruments and equipment.
Ability to coordinate and supervise nursing functions effectively.
Empathetic attitude toward residents; ability to gain their confidence.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written technical instructions.
Ability to recognize and identify symptoms and make quick decisions in emergencies.
Skill in training subordinates and organizing training conducted by the staff.
Ability to positively interact with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies, and the general public.
Provide annual verification of a negative TB skin test.
