Job Summary The Nurse Extern is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care for an identified group of patients within an assigned patient care area under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. Other duties as assigned are included.
Responsibilities
Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care for assigned patients.
Document patient care and collaborate with the RN team.
Follow RN policies and procedures and maintain patient safety.
Provide medication administration and support interdisciplinary care.
Perform basic patient care tasks, including patient hygiene and mobility assistance.
Qualifications
Currently enrolled in an accredited School of Nursing or recently graduated with eligibility to take the NCLEX.
Minimum experience of two acute care medical‑surgical clinical rotations if in a 4‑year program; one medical‑surgical rotation and one pertinent rotation if in a 2‑year program.
At least one clinical rotation must have included medication administration.
Preferred experience of six months or more as a nursing assistant.
State of Wisconsin Nursing Assistant Certification is preferred; otherwise provide professional nurse documentation for basic nursing course completion.
American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider (BLS) or an AHA approved equivalent within 90 days of hire.
Skills
Read, write, understand, perform simple arithmetic, and follow directions related to basic patient care.
Interpersonal skills for interacting with patients, visitors, and physicians courteously.
Ability to complete simple comparisons between numbers.
Attention to detail for 80% of work time when performing basic patient care tasks.
Ability to walk and stand up to 80% of work time and lift and position patients up to 20% of work time.
