Summary The Laboratory Phlebotomist performs positive patient identification and collection of various laboratory specimens on inpatients and outpatients, as needed. Receives specimens into the lab reception area, inputs specimen information into the laboratory information system, and requests patient registration as necessary. Phlebotomists maintain specimen integrity during collection, transport, and processing. They communicate specimen issues to caregivers, provide customer service by greeting visitors, answering the telephone, transferring calls, faxing results, and assisting with specimen requirements. The role also includes additional clerical or clinical duties as required by the service area. Patients served range from newborn through adolescence; collection methods aim to be minimally traumatic and age‑appropriate, with pain management techniques. Adults may be served occasionally. All laboratory personnel follow Cook Children's Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct, and the Clinical Laboratory Compliance Plan, and behave professionally toward physicians, nurses, co‑workers, and other customers.

Qualifications
High School graduate or GED required
Minimum one year phlebotomy experience; pediatric experience preferred
Certification (phlebotomy, medical assistant) preferred
