Job Summary
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) functions as part of the patient care team to achieve goals established for both the individual patient and the clinical service. The LPN assists the Physician, Registered Nurse (RN), Nurse Practitioner (NP), and Physicians Assistants (PA) in various aspects of medical treatment and testing. Responsibilities include reporting identified safety issues such as hazardous environments and medical errors.
The LPN participates in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care based on the objectives, standards, and policies of practical nursing. LPNs work under the supervision and direction of an RN and/or Physicians.
Essential Functions
Completion of admission history (no initial assessment)
Medication by History
Normal saline flushes
Environment of care checklist for SI / HI patients
Fingerstick & insulin coverage
All PO, SQ, IM medications
Oxygen administration and titration per protocol
Skin/Wound dressing changes and treatments
Update Braden and Falls Risk assessment
Venipuncture for the purpose of obtaining blood specimens
IV insertion Heplock
Ordering specialty bed
Vital signs – TPR, BP, pulse ox
SCD
Feeding pumps
Lifting device
In an emergency ONLY: Transcribes physicians’ orders in accordance with appropriate Standards.
Maintains emergency equipment and supplies located in the Emergency department.
Reports symptoms, reactions, and progress of patient to RN and appropriate action taken.
Assists patients when need is apparent or as directed by the nurse or physician.
Assists with procedures listed on Orientation Skills Check List taught through formal training or by registered nurse or physician (e.g., ECG, splinting, urine dip stick, peak flow).
Assists with the preparation of equipment and aids physician during treatment, examination, and testing of patients in accordance with nursing standards.
Follow-up on patient calls as directed by physician and/or RN.
Gives instructions to patients as instructed by physician, nurse practitioner, and physician assistants regarding medications and treatment instructions.
Observes, records, and reports patient’s condition and reaction to drugs and treatments to physicians and/or RN.
Documents nursing observation according to hospital policy.
Provides general nursing care to patients (e.g., bathing, dressing, personal hygiene).
Discontinue IV hep lock.
Document and discharge Patient off Cerner whiteboard.

Minimum Education/Certifications
Relevant experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Valid NJ state license to practice practical nursing.
BLS Required.
IV phlebotomy certification (preferred).
ACLS PALS Preferred (acquire within 6 months of hire).
Working Conditions
Exposed to unpleasant odors, body waste, and communicable diseases. Encounters stress, emergencies, and death. On feet most of the day, lifts patients and moves heavy equipment. Interacts with family, visitors, health team members, and other hospital personnel.
