Position Summary:
Independently performs complex and sophisticated laboratory analysis according to established laboratory protocols and procedures, including patient test results, calibration of equipment, quality control, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting of instruments, method validation studies, result calculations, and more. Provides meaningful data that may be used by a physician in determining the presence, extent, cause and treatment of disease. Ensures accurate test results and communication when appropriate. Assists in the training of new staff, competency of staff, and education of students performing departmental clinical rotations. The work includes the use of microscopes, chemicals, computers, complex laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
Job Requirement – Education/Experience:
Meets the requirements to be licensed as a Medical Technologist (NAC 652.420) or Specialty Technologist (NAC 652.483) in the State of Nevada.
Licensing/Certification Requirements:
A valid State of Nevada license as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or Specialty Technologist is required. Temporary employment for a period not exceeding six (6) months may be granted with documentation that the application for license process has been initiated. Failure to obtain and/or maintain licensure will result in termination of employment.
Recent documented experience in a Hospital / Acute Care Laboratory
Strong preference for candidates with recent graduation from an accredited program (Medical Technologist or Specialty Technologist) with a strong clinical rotation/internship program
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Physical Requirements:
Knowledge of anatomy, proper laboratory techniques including infection and disease control measures, medical technology related to the department, proper handling and disposal of biohazardous waste, department and hospital safety practices and procedures, patient rights, hazardous materials handling, infection control policies, department and hospital emergency response policies.
Skill in applying phlebotomy techniques; procedures for emergency situations; customer service principles; analyzing blood, urine, and other body fluid samples; using laboratory microscopes; troubleshooting and maintaining laboratory instruments and equipment; applying quality controls; interpreting laboratory test results; using computers and software applications; communicating effectively with diverse populations; establishing and maintaining working relationships with all personnel.
Physical Requirements: Mobility to work in a typical clinical setting, stamina to stand and/or walk for extended periods, vision to read printed materials including a VDT screen, hearing and speech to communicate effectively, ability to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and up to 10 pounds frequently.
