A Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the School of Graduate Studies, Meharry Medical College. The Postdoctoral Fellow will conduct advanced research focused on retinal neovascularization and retinopathies, including underlying disease mechanisms and potential therapeutic strategies. The successful candidate will join a collaborative research group utilizing a wide range of in vivo and in vitro approaches to study retinal disease progression and treatment responses.

The laboratory employs multiple state‑of‑the‑art methodologies, including rodent models of retinal disease, Electroretinogram (ERG), Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), Optokinetic Tracking (OKT), and Fundus Angiography (FA). The Postdoctoral Fellow will be responsible for designing and executing experiments, analyzing data, publishing research findings, and training junior lab members.

Essential Functions (Principal Duties And Job Responsibilities)

Design, plan, and conduct experiments related to retinal neovascularization, retinal degeneration, and associated molecular mechanisms.

Perform in vivo experiments using ERG, OCT, OKT, FA, and other imaging or functional techniques to evaluate retinal structure and function in rodent disease models.

Manage and maintain rodent colonies, ensuring proper handling, genotyping, and compliance with animal care protocols.

Conduct molecular and cellular assays, including PCR, Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, and histology.

Analyze experimental data, prepare figures, and contribute to manuscript preparation, conference presentations, and grant proposals.

Assist in training students, technicians, and junior researchers in laboratory methods and scientific principles.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Required

Strong background in molecular biology, with expertise in qPCR, Western blotting, ELISA, immunohistochemistry, functional retinal imaging, biochemistry, or related biomedical sciences.

Experience working with rodent models, including handling, tissue dissection, and in vivo pharmacology, imaging or functional testing.

Proficiency in retinal imaging modalities such as ERG, OCT, FA, and experience with OKT systems.

Ability to perform advanced histological and molecular assays.

Proficiency in data analysis, including with scientific software such as ImageJ, GraphPad Prism, and related analytical tools.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to contribute to scientific manuscripts.

Strong organizational, problem‑solving, and project‑management skills.

Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment; capacity to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

Education and Experience Required

Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biomedical Science, or a closely related field.

Education And Experience Preferred

Experience with retinal disease models or ophthalmic research.

Prior experience with ERG, OCT, OKT, FA, or related imaging modalities.

Experience working with rodent models, including breeding, genotyping, and survival/non‑survival procedures.
