George Xue (00010098))## Work Location:2173 Energy, Coast, and Environment Building## Pay Grade:Academic## Job Description:The Research Assistant Professor is a 9 month, non-tenure-track faculty position in the Department of Oceanography & Coastal Sciences at Louisiana State University. The position will report directly to the Chair of the Department of Oceanography & Coastal Sciences. The initial appointment is 9 month supported by external funding, with renewal contingent on continued availability of grants and contracts. The position will contribute centrally to the Mississippi River Delta Transition Initiative (MissDelta) and other coastal and ocean modeling programs. The successful candidate will establish and lead an independent research program focused on river-delta and shelf processes in the Gulf of America; serve as PI or Co-PI on extramurally funded projects; recruit, mentor, and supervise graduate students, postdocs, and staff; collaborate with faculty and stakeholders to co-produce actionable science; and develop, configure, and optimize coupled ocean and coastal models. Research outcomes are expected to be published in high-impact journals and presented at national and international conferences, advancing the department's research mission.**Job Responsibilities:**40% Conduct research using coupled atmospheric, ocean, wave, and sediment transport modeling systems to simulate and forecast hydrodynamic and biogeochemical conditions in the Gulf of America. Responsibilities include preparing progress and final reports for funded projects, conducting literature reviews to support ongoing and future research, collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data, and attending grant-related meetings to contribute to collaborative discussions.25% Serve as Principal Investigator or Co-Principal Investigator on extramurally funded projects. Develop competitive proposals, secure research funding, and manage project budgets to sustain and grow independent research programs.15% Recruit, mentor, and supervise graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and staff. Provide guidance in research design, numerical modeling, data analysis, and dissemination of results.10% Collaborate with faculty, scientists, and stakeholders across institutions and agencies to co-produce actionable science that informs resilience and management strategies in the Gulf of America and beyond.10% conferences. Contribute to the visibility and advancement of the departments research mission. Other duties as assigned.**Minimum Qualifications:**Ph.D. in Oceanography, Coastal Science, Coastal Engineering or a closely related degree.3 years postdoctoral experience in a research laboratory or five years experience as a extension professional.**Specific Experience:**The ideal candidate will have demonstrated expertise in model development and application in the Gulf of America using the Coupled Ocean–Atmosphere–Wave–Sediment Transport Modeling System (COAWST). A minimum of three years of postdoctoral experience in ocean modeling at a renowned oceanographic research institute is preferred.
