Overview United Veterinary Care is delighted to host veterinary students for externships! This valuable clinical experience will let you take what you’ve learned in the classroom and put it to the test in an animal hospital of your choice. Our hands‑on externships are designed exclusively for veterinary students at AVMA‑accredited veterinary schools in their clinical years, typically their 3rd or 4th year of vet school. Since every student has different interests, we are excited to offer these programs at a wide variety of our amazing partner hospitals. We know that travel and lodging expenses can be cost‑prohibitive; to make our externships as accessible as possible, we offer stipends to externs to help offset these costs (unless prohibited by your veterinary school).
Eligibility Requirements
Must be a current veterinary student at an AVMA‑accredited veterinary school.
Priority scheduling is given to students in their clinical years on official externship blocks for school credit.
Must provide proof of professional liability insurance. SAVMA members qualify for no‑cost insurance by applying at the following link: SAVMA Member Benefit and Resources | AVMA PLIT.
Hospital Information The Peoria Area Veterinary Group has three locations—Peoria, Dunlap, and Chillicothe. Within these hospitals, we offer comprehensive medical and surgical care and top‑of‑the‑line client service. Our doctors have special interests in oncology, reproduction/theriogenology, and orthopedic surgery, and we provide surgical correction for patella luxation, CCL ruptures, and fracture repairs. If you are looking to spend your externship in a hospital that practices advanced medicine and surgery, enjoys collaborating on cases, and will help further your skills and confidence, Peoria Area Veterinary Group would be an ideal selection.

What to Expect From Your Externship During your externship, you will actively participate in cases and develop toward becoming a veterinarian. You will be supervised by an experienced veterinarian and skilled support staff who will serve as your mentors. Expect to be included in surgical cases, dental procedures, emergencies, sick patient workups, and routine medical appointments. If there are specific technical skills you want to improve, let us know so we can emphasize those areas. We encourage active participation, introduction to clients, and genuine inclusion on our team. You will conduct preliminary exams, formulate diagnostic and treatment plans, and discuss findings with your supervising veterinarian to confirm your plan before proceeding. Externs are encouraged to select one case per week for further research and discussion. These case discussions foster mutual learning and reinforce mentorship as a two‑way street.
