Veterinary Student Externship – Owings Mills Veterinary Center
United Veterinary Care is delighted to host veterinary students for externships! This valuable clinical experience will let you take what you’ve learned in the classroom and put it to the test in an animal hospital of your choice. Our hands‑on externships are designed exclusively for veterinary students at AVMA‑accredited veterinary schools in their clinical years (typically their 3rd or 4th year of vet school). Since every student has different interests, we are excited to offer these programs at a wide variety of our amazing partner hospitals.
We understand that travel and lodging expenses for externships can often be cost‑prohibitive on a student’s budget. To make our externships as accessible as possible, we offer stipends to externs to help offset these costs (unless prohibited by the veterinary school you are attending).
Eligibility Requirements
Must be a current veterinary student at an AVMA‑accredited veterinary school.
Priority scheduling is given to students in their clinical years on official externship blocks for school credit.
Must provide proof of professional liability insurance. SAVMA members qualify for no‑cost insurance by applying at the following link: SAVMA Member Benefit and Resources | AVMA PLIT.
Owings Mills Veterinary Center After combining two veterinary practices into one at the beginning of 2020, the newly named Owings Mills Veterinary Center continues to provide superior care to the pets in our community in one setting. Our goal is to build a close, personal relationship with our clients and their pets. At our facility, we work to establish a comfortable atmosphere for clients and staff while providing top quality care and customer service.
We started renovations last October to expand the size of our hospital so that we can accommodate our growth. The expansion will be a complete facility renovation and will include two additional exam rooms (to have a total of five) as well as adding digital dental radiography and updated imaging technology.
We are a busy hospital with an emphasis on learning in a relaxed, collaborative environment. In addition to joining our doctors, you will be supported by a team of five technicians, two technician assistants, two CSRs, and our practice manager. We have in‑house Idexx blood analyzers (CBC/Chem, lytes, SDMA, T4), US (new machine coming with expansion), and digital radiography.
Species Treated Dogs; Cats.
Services Offered Digital radiographs, Laser, Ultrasound.
What to Expect from Your Externship During your externship, you can expect to actively participate in cases and further your development toward becoming a veterinarian. Throughout your time with us, you will always be supervised by an experienced veterinarian and skilled support staff. Expect to be included in surgical cases, dental procedures, emergencies, sick patient workups, and routine medical appointments. We encourage active participation, introduce externs to our clients, and truly make them part of our team. You will conduct preliminary exams, formulate plans for diagnostics and treatment, and discuss these cases with your supervising veterinarian. We also encourage externs to select one case per week to further research and engage in case discussions.
We truly enjoy hosting externs and having new graduates join our teams since each new team member brings new shared knowledge.
