Job Summary The Cardiovascular Technologist I is a professional who, without prior cath lab or interventional experience, will receive training to assist during diagnostic and therapeutic invasive cardiovascular procedures. Responsibilities include operating specialized equipment safely and efficiently, maintaining sterile technique, and assisting the Cath/EP Lab Manager and physicians throughout procedures. The technologist may participate in cath or EP call rotations once appropriately oriented and competency‑verified.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions

Assist the physician in performing facility‑specific cardiovascular cath and EP procedures.

Work in monitoring, scrubbing, or circulating roles.

Apply critical thinking skills during procedures.

Collaborate with interventional cardiologists, electrophysiologists, and cardiologists.

Pre‑prepare and educate patients for procedures.

Demonstrate and uphold sterile technique.

Maintain flexibility with hours to meet departmental needs, including scheduled and on‑call shifts.

Follow established lines of communication and authority.

Use proper scripting (e.g., AIDET) when introducing self to patients or guardians.

Transport patients as necessary.

Provide privacy and comfort for patients/customers.

Assist with maintenance of departmental records, Joint Commission standards, State and Federal regulations, and performance improvement activities.

Enter data into the cath lab log, verifying accuracy and completeness.

Complete required paperwork and answer departmental phone calls using proper scripting.

Maintain stock levels and update supplies.

Maintain current license and BLS/ACLS certifications.

Collaborate with cath/EP lab staff to achieve optimal outcomes.

Perform duties assigned by leadership and prepare necessary supplies and equipment for procedures.

Verify patient identification using two identifiers (e.g., armband, DOB, verbal ID).

Verify front‑of‑chart data for name and similar name stickers.

Verify written orders and consent, seeking clarification when necessary.

Utilize pre‑procedural verification/time‑out forms and comply with site/side marking.

Provide patient, family, and support system education related to procedures and follow‑up care.

Provide post‑procedural home care instructions as needed.

Perform other duties as assigned and comply with all Wellstar policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.

Required Minimum Education

Associate’s in Health Science or Accredited Program Radiologic Science (Preferred).

Bachelor’s in Health Science (Preferred).

Required Minimum Licenses and Certifications

ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support (or ARC‑ALS, ACLS‑I, ACLS‑P) within 180 days.

BLS – Basic Life Support (or ARC‑BLS, BLS‑I) within 180 days.

Required Minimum Experience One year of relevant experience in a medical setting (e.g., LPN, RT, EMT/Paramedic) may be considered in lieu of formal education. Candidates must be graduates of a CVT program. Prior work experience in a medical setting is preferred.

Required Minimum Skills

Basic knowledge of cardiovascular cath or electrophysiology procedures, patient positioning, exposure factors, and radiation protection.

Basic knowledge of electrocardiography, coronary heart disease, cardiac anatomy, and physiology—KG interpretation preferred.

Basic knowledge of hemodynamics, intracardiac electrograms, and electrophysiology equipment.

Ability to respond quickly to emergency patient care situations.

Effective communication and collaborative skills with colleagues, patients, families, and physicians.

Proficiency in verbal and written English.

Positive attitude and willingness to learn.
