Veterinary Technician Job Description The Veterinary Technician supports veterinarians in delivering high‑quality medical care to patients while providing exceptional service to clients. This role requires strong technical skills, compassion for animals, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast‑paced clinical environment.
Key Responsibilities
Assist veterinarians during examinations, treatments, and surgical procedures
Prepare patients for surgery, monitor anesthesia and recovery
Collect and process laboratory samples (blood, urine, fecal, cytology)
Perform diagnostic tests and accurately record results
Administer medications and vaccines as directed
Take and develop radiographs following safety protocols
Maintain accurate and thorough medical records
Educate clients on treatment plans, medications, nutrition, and preventive care
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe hospital environment
Properly restrain animals with care and professionalism
Assist with inventory management and equipment maintenance
Collaborate effectively with veterinarians, technicians, and support staff
Qualifications
Graduate of an accredited Veterinary Technician program (preferred)
Licensed/Registered/Certified Veterinary Technician (preferred / as required by state law); Relevant work experience will be considered
Previous clinical experience in a veterinary setting requiredam
Proficient in basic computer skills and practice management software
Skills & Competencies
Strong animal handling and patient care skills
Excellent communication and client education abilities
Attention to detail and strong organizational skills
Ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast‑paced environment
Compassionate, dependable, and team‑oriented
Willingness to learn and adapt to new techniques and technologies
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand for extended periods
Lift and carry up to 40–50 pounds with assistance as needed
Perform repetitive tasks including bending, kneeling, and reaching
Work Environment
Fast‑paced veterinary hospital or clinic
Exposure to animals, zoonotic diseases, and medical equipment
May include evenings, weekends, and holiday shifts
