Position Summary The Histotechnologist I processes surgical, autopsy, and study specimens for pathologic diagnosis. Responsibilities include tissue fixation, processing, freezing, microtomy, frozen sectioning, and staining slides for microscopic examination by the Pathologist.
Responsibilities
Perform basic histotechnology staining techniques.
Operate computerized equipment for processing and staining specimens.
Use the laboratory computer system to add, cancel, and verify completed orders.
Perform and document quality control and preventive maintenance procedures.
Troubleshoot instruments, processing, and staining processes.
Place engineering and biomed service requests as needed.
Prepare stock and working reagents and maintain an adequate supply.
Receive and process specimens, answer the telephone, and greet guests to the department.
Report all unacceptable quality control and instrument failures to a senior technologist, pathology coordinator, manager, or Pathologist, and document discrepancies and their resolutions.
Assume responsibilities such as outside facility frozen section room maintenance, projects, teaching, technical in charge, reagent validations, or evaluation of new technology.
Maintain reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards.
Maintain compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
Qualifications Education / Training
Associate’s degree required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Graduate from an approved school of Histotechnology.
Licensure / Certification
Maintain a current Florida license as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist (Qualification: Histology Technologist).
Certified as a Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL), or eligible for either certification through a professional laboratory agency such as the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).
