Job Overview Duke Health Lake Norman Hospital in Mooresville, North Carolina is the smallest of Duke Health’s four hospitals with 123 beds. It offers a comprehensive range of medical services, including 24‑hour emergency care, cardiology, orthopedics, women’s services, and surgical specialties. The Echocardiography team performs daily clinical operations, including conducting echocardiograms, entering preliminary interpretations, and covering all sites and shifts— including call coverage.

Responsibilities

Perform routine and emergency 2‑D, 3‑D, Doppler, transesophageal, and stress echocardiograms as requested by physicians in accordance with standard practices.

Operate and maintain echocardiography equipment—utilizing ancillary devices such as transducers, digital networking systems, and off‑line analysis systems; perform routine cleaning, preventive maintenance, and report any malfunction to the echo lab manager.

Analyze patient medical records to obtain history of symptoms and necessary information for diagnostic procedures; prepare preliminary reports for cardiologist review, including comparison to prior studies.

Participate in quality improvement activities, evaluate procedure results for technical quality and accuracy, and maintain logs, files, and records.

Assist physicians with guided echo studies to aid complex procedures and reduce procedural risks.

Serve as a resource—support cardiac sonographers and fellows with pre/post procedures, preliminary image review, and reporting; act as a preceptor for onboarding new sonographers through orientation, in‑service education, and curriculum delivery.

Assist in establishing and maintaining departmental objectives and goals as the site Charge Sonographer; recommend and support quality assurance initiatives.

When the manager is unavailable, supervise, direct, coach, and mentor staff; evaluate performance, provide feedback, coordinate scheduling, monitor equipment maintenance and downtime, and ensure compliance with departmental and institutional policies.

Qualifications

Must obtain ARDMS/CCI certification in Echocardiography within 18 months of hire; BLS certification required.

Education: Graduate degree or completion of a program that meets eligibility requirements for registry/certification.

Experience: Level I – no experience beyond education and certification; Level II – minimum 2 years as a sonographer; Level III – minimum 4 years within the specialty modality.

Ability to work variable shifts, weekends, and provide emergent call coverage.
