Summary Conducts routine procedures and tests using radiology equipment to acquire patient diagnostic data. Prepares for and assists the radiologist in completion of intricate radiographic procedures, including preparation and administration of contrast media and medications in accordance with state and federal regulations. Performs patient assessments and provides patient care. Evaluates the appropriateness of examinations and assesses the quality of radiographic images. Hours: Mon‑Fri, 11:30 am – 8:00 pm.
Responsibilities
Demonstrates thorough knowledge of all aspects of General Diagnostic Radiology, adheres to departmental protocols and procedures of the UNC Healthcare System, obtains RT(R) credentials and maintains active status, and actively troubleshoots work‑unit problems with equipment and protocols.
Ensures patient demographics, emulsifiers, and requested examinations are correct; critiques, orients, and saves all relevant images; transmits QA‑edited images to PACS; documents completion or cancellation of procedures in RIS; reports any equipment problems to appropriate resources; and uses PACS and HIS systems for obtaining additional study data.
Conducts routine procedures and tests using radiology equipment to acquire diagnostic data.
Performs work in a timely manner, producing quality radiographic images consistently; analyzes requests and draws appropriate conclusions; reviews orders and images for correlation with patient demographics; ensures accuracy of information; reviews daily schedules and patient status; maintains a clean and safe work environment; documents incidents and advises supervisors of improvement opportunities.
Uses RIS, CIS, PACS, and SMS effectively to access information, document procedural status, modify orders for appropriateness, complete exams in the RIS system, QC’s, and transmit information to PACS; verifies correct arrival of information.
Verifies patient identity, obtains relevant history, verifies pregnancy status before administering ionizing radiation, evaluates physical condition, develops an action plan for performing examinations, determines if additional medical personnel or equipment is needed, assists patients requiring extra attention, reacts to emergencies, and ensures patient safety.
Education Requirements
Associate’s degree or completion of an accredited Radiologic Sciences Program. If degree is not yet complete, candidates may be selected contingent on completing a degree program within 90 days of hire.
Licensure/Certification Requirements
Registered by the American Registry of Radiological Sciences or registry eligible and become registered within one (1) year from date of hire. (Registry‑eligible candidates must provide a copy of diploma from an accredited program.) Must maintain registry status and continuing education requirements annually.
Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification.
Professional Experience Requirements
No prior experience required.
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements
Knowledgeable of radiation protection and safety in addition to general and electrical safety, infection control, TB, and standard precautions.
