Qualifications

United States Citizenship (non‑citizens may be appointed only if qualified citizens cannot be recruited).

English language proficiency as required by 38 U.S.C. 7403(f).

Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) or Registered Dietitian (RD). Must be registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). Non‑credentialed Dietitians may be appointed at GS‑07 or GS‑09 on a temporary basis while they obtain their RDN credential.

Bachelor’s or higher degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college or university (or foreign equivalent). Foreign degrees must be evaluated by ACEND and meet international standards; they must also have completed an ACEND‑accredited experiential program and obtained a verification statement from the program director.

Experience requirements vary by grade:

GS‑07: No additional experience beyond the basic requirements.

GS‑09: At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade or a master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.

GS‑11: At least one year of experience as an RDN equivalent to the next lower grade. Knowledge, skills, and abilities include delivering patient care using the NCP, interpreting research to apply evidence‑based practices, developing patient‑centered goals, analyzing data for performance improvement, collaborating with stakeholders, and complying with accrediting and regulatory authorities.

Physical requirements: No essential physical demands; pre‑placement physical examination not required.

Responsibilities

Conduct comprehensive nutrition assessments using the Nutritional Care Process, including nutrition‑focused physical examinations to establish a diagnosis and determine risk of malnutrition.

Develop and implement Medical Nutrition Therapy to address the nutrition diagnosis, evaluating effectiveness and modifying plans as needed.

Calculate nutrient requirements and necessary diet restrictions, tailoring diet prescriptions to individual patients.

Document interventions in the medical record using the ADIME format.

Identify patients in need of nutritional support, recommend appropriate support modes, and communicate with the health‑care team.

Participate actively in interdisciplinary team meetings, provide nutrition education and counseling, and utilize virtual care technology to improve access.

Maintain productivity and accurate record keeping of daily clinical activities.

Continuously improve quality of care for Veterans, lead new initiatives, use data to develop measures and initiate corrective actions.

Collaborate with the Food Operations Section and department leadership to enhance the dining experience and serve as a liaison between clinical units and food services.

Perform other related duties as assigned appropriate to grade and assignment.

Work schedule is negotiated based on operational needs; this position is not a virtual role.
