Job Title: Medical Assistant, Gastroenterology
Join Beth Israel Lahey Health as a Medical Assistant in the Gastroenterology department. Under general supervision and with clinical oversight, you will assist in delivering high quality, safe clinical care.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Understand patient/family concerns and respond with empathy.
Maintain organization and coordination of safe patient care for assigned patients.
Collaborate in a culturally competent care plan, addressing preventive measures.
Deliver age‑appropriate care and provide patient education.
Care for patients as delegated by providers within scope of practice.
Gather and document patient information for assessment.
Evaluate outcomes of interventions within scope and follow plan directions.
Greet, identify, transport and escort patients to exam room.
Obtain rooming standards and document data in Electronic Health Record (EHR); pends orders as required.
Prepare patients for examination by documenting chief complaint, history, medication list, allergies, smoking history, and vital signs (height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, respiration, temperature).
Observe patients, document and report findings; notify providers of abnormal vital signs, pain scores or safety concerns.
Assist providers with patient visits and care, including preparation of equipment, instruments and supplies.
Provide instructions to patients regarding diagnostic tests and procedures.
Specimen Preparation & Testing
Label and transport specimens according to labeling policy.
Test specimens as appropriate (blood, urine, finger‑stick glucose, stool occult blood, rapid strep, pregnancy tests, microalbumin, hemoglobin A1c, protime, throat cultures, PAP smears, wound cultures, biopsies, joint injections).
Perform electrocardiograms, spirometries, monofilament testing, vision and hearing testing per standards.
Assist with wound care and other testing as per training.
Assist providers with minor procedures.
Document testing results per protocol.
Administer immunizations and injections per written orders.
Follow department procedures for access to non‑controlled medications.
Perform phlebotomy procedures (draw blood, spin samples).
Maintain clinical and quality/improvement competencies; participate in QI activities.
Non‑Clinical / Indirect Patient Care
Pre‑visit planning and prioritise daily work to support patients and provider schedules.
Participate in huddles to anticipate workflow needs.
Review patient records against quality measures; advise providers on gaps.
Prepare supportive documentation for appointments and procedures.
Update records and insert required forms per protocol.
Follow up with patients/specialists to ensure care plan adherence.
Confirm lab and ancillary tests completed and results documented.
Post‑visit work: enter charges, review billing accuracy, check ICD‑10/CPT codes.
Assist with panel management and care coordination across continuum.
Track test results and communicate normal findings to providers.
Provide patient education materials and diagnostic preparation instructions.
Serve as liaison with patients, families, case managers, payers.
Manage registry health data and monitor patient progress via disease‑specific registries.
Assist with EMR maintenance and scanning loose reports.
Maintain exam rooms, supplies, equipment, and linen; prepare for sterilization.
Manage provider inbox folders, labs, faxes, and referrals.
Respond to patient messages with provider input.
Provide backup administrative support as needed.
Answer provider calls, take messages, and conduct research.
Front‑desk coverage: greet patients, register, verify insurance, handle copayments.
Schedule appointments and verify insurance eligibility.
Check‑out desk coverage; schedule follow‑ups; handle referrals and pre‑authorizations.
Education & Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Preferred: Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program or possess a Medical Assistant Certification (AAMA, CCMA, RMA, NCMA).
Licensure, Certification & Registration
Preferred: Certification required upon hire and maintained if not a program graduate. Those hired prior to May 28, 2017 without certification are grandfathered.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
Strong interpersonal and customer‑service skills; communicate with patients, families, physicians, and staff.
Knowledge of medical terminology and basic computer skills for EHR and registration.
Problem‑solving, analytical, critical thinking, and good judgment.
Organizational skills and ability to multitask and prioritize work.

Pay Range $21.00 – $28.26 per hour. Compensation depends on factors such as seniority, education, certification, location, and job responsibilities. Additional pay may apply for shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime, or other practices.
