Position Summary This position works under the supervision of the HLA laboratory supervisor. Medical Laboratory Scientists in the HLA laboratory perform a variety of technical procedures, including HLA typing, Luminex‑based HLA antibody identification, and donor/recipient flow cytometric cross‑matching. The role maintains instrumentation, identifies abnormal results, aids in instrument repair, and assists with limited teaching and administrative duties.
Overall Responsibilities
Provide direct patient care by supplying appropriate blood components based on accurate testing.
Perform ABO/Rh, IAT, DAT, antibody identification, cross‑matching, automated ABO/RH, IAT equipment, wash red blood cells and plasma, platelet crossmatching and antibody identification.
Perform daily reagent QC and preventive maintenance on equipment.
Issue blood and blood components following the Massive Transfusion Protocol.
Communicate effectively with blood‑bank customers, including physicians, nurses, and other UAMS staff.
Receive, label, and ensure proper collection of samples.
Assist in training new staff and students, maintaining competency with updated policies.
Report deviations from standard operating procedures.
Assist with quarterly, semi‑annual, and annual quality control.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Sciences, or an approved ASCP discipline (30 semester hours in biology and chemistry).
Preferred Qualifications
ASCP and/or CHT (ABHI) certification.
Previous clinical laboratory experience.
