Chemist I or II – University of Wisconsin-Madison The Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH) is the state’s public and environmental health laboratory. As part of the University of Wisconsin‑Madison, the WSLH is committed to exploring new ideas that benefit the state, the nation, and the world. The newborn screening laboratory offers a fast‑paced, full‑time public health opportunity for a Chemist.

The primary role of this position is to perform clinical laboratory tests to identify and appropriately treat metabolic and congenital disorders in newborns, children, and adults as part of the WSLH Newborn Screening Program. Techniques relevant to the position include tandem mass spectrometry, enzymatic assays, immunoreaction assays, and molecular technologies. Depending on prior experience and laboratory needs, duties may emphasize one or two areas. The chemist assists with pre‑analytical, analytical, and post‑analytical phases of testing, including reporting of screening test results, and models quality management principles in daily work.

Essential Responsibilities

65% – Prepares, develops, and conducts chemical research experiments and analyses of specimens employing quality control and quality assurance practices

5% – Utilizes, maintains, and troubleshoots laboratory instrumentation and information management systems to meet unit objectives in alignment with strategic initiatives

15% – Prepares, reviews, verifies, and reports test result data

10% – Utilizes assigned analytical methods for quality requirements to verify test result validity and regulatory compliance

5% – Verifies test result validity and/or completes regulatory compliance activities

5% – Provides result interpretation and participates in educational and outreach activities

5% – Performs non‑routine instrument maintenance and repairs

Key Job Responsibilities

Engages in the development, evaluation, and implementation of new methodologies including chemical research experiments – 10%

Performs high‑complexity analytical testing with quality control and assurance practices – 25%

Utilizes, maintains, and troubleshoots laboratory instrumentation and information management systems – 25%

Prepares technical reports, makes scientific recommendations, and presents materials to stakeholders – 10%

Supports and/or trains new employees, students, and professional colleagues – 15%

Provides result interpretation and participates in educational and outreach activities – 5%

Performs non‑routine instrument maintenance and repairs – 5%

Required Qualifications

WSLH is CLIA Certified and CAP Accredited.

Candidate must meet 42 CFR 493.1489 Standard; Testing Personnel qualifications for High‑Complexity Testing.

Work experience: 0–2 years for Chemist I or equivalent education and training, 2+ years for Chemist II; preference for experience in a clinical laboratory and mass spectrometry.

Must be able to visually distinguish colors; a successful color vision screening test is required prior to an offer.

Education Minimum: Bachelor of Science in a chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution. Official transcript required at employment. For foreign degrees, proof of equivalency by a nationally recognized evaluation organization (e.g., NACES or AICE) is required and the candidate is responsible for associated expenses.
