Process Design Engineer – Mechanical Systems Divert is a circular economy company on a mission to prevent food from being wasted through nationwide infrastructure and innovative technologies. Founded in 2007, the company provides an end-to-end solution that leverages data to prevent waste, facilitates edible food recovery to provide to people in need, and transforms unsold food products into renewable energy to power communities. Through this integrated approach to reducing wasted food–Prevent, Provide, Power™–Divert works with customers across the U.S. to reduce wasted food and positively impact people and the environment.
Location ideal candidates will be in the Columbus, OH area / commutable to Columbus; candidates outside of this area will be considered based on experience
Start Date ideal start date for this role is January 2025
Travel the initial need for travel will be for significant on-site presence to support commissioning and startup of two new facilities in the first half of 2026. One facility in Longview, WA and then a second in Lexington, NC. A high rate of travel may be necessary during this time ( > 50%). The second half of the year would see a pivot toward more future facility development and a more typical, moderate amount of overnight travel (~25-50%, project dependent), across the US.
Responsibilities
Play a pivotal role in the development and successful execution of the company’s technological solutions for recycling wasted food
Issuing requests for proposals (RFPs) and managing technology/vendor selection for process equipment, machinery, instrumentation, etc.
Working closely with vendors, contractors, and internal disciplines throughout project scope development, design reviews, and execution and ensuring seamless integration with the balance of plant and standards of design
Understanding the impacts of design decisions on safety, process, operation, project scope, and permitting. Working cross-functionally to ensure that all such considerations are understood by the team
A data driven approach to supporting optimization, troubleshooting, and constraint busting for existing facilities
Documenting control narratives and communicating process needs to the controls team for new equipment or processes
Developing commissioning plans and assisting in commissioning and start-up
Developing procedures for turnover to operations
Screening alternative and/or novel technology options
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in mechanical or chemical engineering or similar from an accredited program
7 to 10 years' experience in designing and/or operating/supporting industrial processes, ideally within anaerobic digestion, waste handling, wastewater, and/or RNG
Strong engineering fundamentals, independent thinking, strong organizational and planning abilities and excellent analytical and problem-solving skills are essential
Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication
Desire to continue to grow their career with a progressive and entrepreneurial organization
Impeccable execution skills, self-starter, motivated, and independent, yet communicative about plans and progress.
Preferred direct experience designing and/or supporting facilities in the waste processing industry. Including depackaging, anaerobic digestion, wastewater, and/or biogas upgrade
Operational and/or hands on experience and perspective preferred
