The schedule for this position is Wednesday–Sunday, 10:30 AM–7:30 PM (with some variation.)

The Security Specialist assists with oversight and management of the day-to-day operations of student gallery attendants, ensuring professionalism and preparedness to assist patrons. This position is actively present on the gallery floor to provide direct supervision, guidance, and support to attendants, ensuring that security protocols are followed and that the museum remains a welcoming and safe environment for all patrons.

In addition to supervisory duties, the Security Specialist acts as the first responder to emergencies, including medical incidents, security breaches, and fire hazards. This position handles patron concerns, providing timely assistance and resolving issues in a calm and professional manner. The role also involves administrative tasks, conducting regular safety inspections, coordinating staff schedules, and collaborating with other departments to ensure the smooth operation of museum events, programs, and exhibitions.

The Security Specialist manages mid-day to evening building and perimeter security, the integrity and operation of security systems, environmental and control room equipment, and activities. This position trains student gallery attendants and serves as a first responder. The position is on-call 24 hours for emergencies, alarm activations, environmental issues, and other serious building problems. The Security Specialist must be available to work shift coverages, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed. The nature of the work requires sustained physical effort involving considerable standing and walking for extended periods of time. Overtime may be assigned as necessary.

Responsibilities Crowd Control

Maintain order among crowds at public events using means other than firearms.

Respond to alarm activations, inspect areas for security, fire, and accident hazards, and take appropriate action to minimize risks.

Control public safety rule infractions and irregularities in public buildings such as auditoriums, museums, and theaters.

Protect BAMPFA property, including artwork and the facility.

Event and Program Support

Work closely with BAMPFA staff to oversee and assist with facility events and operations, including hands‑on participation in setup, cleanup, and other event needs.

Serve as one of the security special event coordinators responsible for event staffing.

Resolve problems or issues that may disrupt events.

Maintain order in the facilities, at events, and during programs.

Visitor Service

Assist and direct visitors, maintaining positive public relations with all patrons.

Maintain a visible presence in assigned areas to deter criminal activity.

Ensure established rules are followed by the public.

Assisting in Security Supervisor

Serve as backup for either of the two Security Supervisors as needed.

Provide general security and operational support to the Gallery Attendant Security Supervisor.

Cover other security posts, provide crowd control, and act as first responder to art, film, or patron‑related incidents.

Resolve visitor concerns promptly and professionally.

Gallery Attendant Supervision

Assign and inspect galleries to ensure attendants are performing duties effectively.

Coordinate with the Senior Manager of Operations to determine staffing requirements for events.

Maintain sign‑up sheets and schedules for events and operations.

Manage email communications in conjunction with the gallery attendant supervisor.

Maintain attendant database sheets and schedules.

Review and approve gallery attendant timesheets in the Caltime payroll system.

Closing Procedures

Control closing of the galleries and entry to restricted areas.

Check identities of individuals seeking entry.

Use camera systems and other security equipment to monitor and regulate activity.

Serve on committees and work with campus officers responsible for building and security services.

Collaborate on special projects and coordinate with campus repair services.

Conduct minor maintenance and ensure vendors and guests meet security guidelines.

Reporting and Records Maintenance

Maintain and review logs, recordings, databases, and communication records.

Ensure confidential records and electronic data are securely handled and stored in compliance with applicable laws and policies.

Provide training on record management as needed.

Required Qualifications

High school diploma and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications Knowledge of hazardous materials regulations, fire codes, building codes, and relevant safety requirements. Knowledge of UC policies and HR processes. Experience ensuring compliance with federal and state regulatory agencies. Experience working in a museum security role and with students in a professional setting. First Aid, AED, and Emergency Preparedness training preferred.

The budgeted annual salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $63,000–$70,000. Due to compliance with California SB‑1162, BAMPFA will not be able to offer a candidate anything above this posted amount. This is a full‑time (40 hours/week), career position that is eligible for UC Benefits. This is an exempt monthly‑paid position.
