Job Overview As a Smart Shop Exempt Department Manager, you will oversee department operations, including perishable departments, center store, inventory flow, receiving, and shelf edge, with a specific emphasis in your area of expertise (e.g., produce, market, front end).
Responsibilities
Use independent judgment to make employment‑related and business decisions, including product and department strategies, hiring, promotions, and disciplinary actions.
Manage staffing, training, and scheduling for the area of focus.
Review and analyze financial and performance reports, identifying opportunities and issues.
Lead Operational Review Team (ORT) audits and findings.
Conduct detailed store and/or department walkthroughs.
Maintain work instructions and inventory estimates for the department.
Monitor and report on inventory levels and Direct Store Delivery (DSD) accounting.
Create weekly schedules to meet business needs.
Operate in a cross‑functional environment and support the total store mindset.
Sales / Strategy
Monitor craftsmanship, shrink, safety, and quality assurance within the area.
Create actionable plans and follow up on “What If” scenarios.
Serve as the Brand Promise Champion.
Customer Service
Focus on partner/customer relationships, collaboration, communication, and education.
Model superior customer service across store departments.
Identify and develop future talent.
Promote active community engagement.
Area of Focus – Inventory Flow
Manage center store inventory workflow, including receiving and shelf edge.
Assist in weekly execution of center store merchandiser planner.
Plan using the daily forecast and inventory workflow.
Lead the inventory flow team to maximize productivity and efficiencies.
Additional Focus Areas
Front End – manage and oversee overall front‑end operations, ensuring efficient customer throughput and adherence to operating procedures.
Market – oversee meat market operations, food safety compliance, and partner safety requirements.
Produce / Bakery – manage overall produce and bakery operations, plan merchandise programs, and ensure food safety compliance.
Floor (Total Store) – oversee store close, evening replenishment, purchasing of supplies, safety and sanitation programs, and the Store Recovery Team.
Background Requirements
Completion of H‑E‑B or JVSS Management Training Program.
Operational/retail management experience.
Leadership experience in a complex environment with multiple direct reports.
Thorough understanding of retail accounting.
Experience in ordering, inventory maintenance, and shrink control.
Strong people leadership, ownership mentality, strategic planning, and adaptability.
Interpersonal skills.
Flexibility to work a schedule that may include night shifts.
Training Requirements
Successful completion of JVSS or H‑E‑B School of Retail Management (SORM).
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
Lifting moderate to heavy loads; bending, pushing, pulling, kneeling, squatting, standing, and walking for extended periods.
Exposure to moving mechanical parts, equipment, wet, humid, dry, cold, hot conditions, and moderate noise.
Fast‑paced, multitasking environment with shifting priorities and customer interaction.
