Role Summary The ED Tech is a member of the emergency department patient care services team with primary responsibilities for technical, multi‑skilled direct and indirect patient care activities. The ED Tech works under the supervision of a registered nurse who delegates tasks based upon patient needs and ED Tech skills and scope of practice.
Responsibilities
Collaborate with care team members to ensure consistency and quality of care, and promote productive employee relations among staff members.
Assist the registered nurse by gathering data on patient conditions, direct patient observation, and reporting changes in patient medical and/or emotional condition.
Document interventions and patient responses according to policy and assist nursing personnel in responding to various emergency patient situations.
Assist in the training/orientation of other technicians and care team members as directed.
Follow all departmental policies, procedures and objectives; continuous improvement initiatives; safety environmental and infection control standards.
Demonstrate sensitivity to patient comfort and privacy, answer questions from patients and families, and explain procedures and processes within the scope of training/responsibilities while maintaining confidentiality.
Perform general clerical duties such as answering telephones, call lights, greeting patients and visitors as required by unit needs.
Participate in workshops, educational programs, in‑service meetings, and review current literature to enhance personal growth and maintain competencies.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED.
Graduation from a school of practical nursing or related program.
Completion of one of the following: Certified PCA/PCT Program, Certified Nurse Assistant Program or equivalent, Medical Assistant Program, EMT Program, or phlebotomy training program.
Preferred Skills
Good analytical and observational problem‑solving skills.
Mathematical ability to perform basic calculations.
Adaptability to new technologies used in the work environment.
Strong interpersonal, verbal, and teamwork skills for effective communication with patients, families, and hospital personnel.
Good reading, writing, and comprehension skills.
Physical ability to walk, stand, lift (up to 60+ lbs.), bend, pull, push, and assist with patient repositioning, transport, and basic ADLs.
Visual acuity and manual dexterity.
Ability to perform routine clerical functions such as answering telephones and retrieving basic computer information.
Willingness to make a meaningful contribution to the work environment through behavior and attitude.
