Heavy Equipment Operator – City of Clovis Veterans Preference: this posting will be open to veterans for the first 24 hours. After this period, the job will be released to all job seekers.

Position serves as operator of heavy construction equipment and the maintenance, repair and construction of public thoroughfares and related improvements. Serves as crew chief or supervisor of crews in the maintenance of drainage systems, street repairs and emergency responses. Will be required with infrequent overtime during evening hours, weekends, holidays plus stand‑by on a rotation basis.

Safety Sensitive position. Subject to drug testing policy for prohibited substances.

Responsibilities

Operate all heavy equipment such as graders, dozers, scrapers, compactors, grade‑alls, tractor/trailer rigs, chip spreaders, asphalt lay down machine and oil truck.

Clean services and make minor repairs to assigned equipment according to manufacturer specifications.

Maintain records of preventive maintenance service performed and daily operation.

Make on‑site decisions concerning grades and location of excavation for all heavy equipment.

Direct subordinate operators in specific tasks required by job assignment to ensure progress safely and efficiently.

May be assigned as crew leader of street repair crew using equipment such as air compressors, jack hammers, tampers and pavement saws.

Assist in snow/ice control using snow plow, salt, or sand truck spreader.

Assist in cleanup of damaged trees and buildings after storms.

Assist other divisions with tasks such as using front‑loader or other equipment to get units out of mud.

Assist in construction of offices, forms for concrete or head walls in drainage ditches, and some welding.

Minimum Qualifications

Three years experience operating and maintaining heavy equipment.

Preferred experience in actual layout of new roads and operation of heavy equipment for road construction.

Licenses and Certificates

Valid New Mexico Commercial Driver License or able to obtain within six months.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Department rules and regulations and contingency plans.

Safe operation of heavy equipment such as graders and loaders.

Perform functions with minimal supervision; understand and follow basic safety precautions, rules and regulations.

Interact diplomatically with public and establish effective working relationships.

Physical Requirements

Moderately heavy work involving frequent standing, walking, balancing, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling and squatting; pushing, pulling and lifting items weighing up to 100 pounds.

Working Conditions

Regular attendance essential.

Subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable regulations and City of Clovis policies.

Essential duties performed outdoors with exposure to all weather conditions.

Exposure to airborne particles, potentially toxic and/or caustic chemicals, extreme temperatures, travel between sites, work around traffic and heavy construction equipment.

Use of safety shoes, glasses and other equipment required.
