Summary

Tree Worker (Seasonal) – National Park Service. The purpose of this position is to properly care for and maintain trees within the boundaries of Rock Creek Park. The typical seasonal entry‑on‑duty period is May‑September, but dates may vary due to weather, project needs or funding. Anticipated entry on duty is the beginning of May. Open to the first 100 applicants or until 12/24/2025, whichever comes first. All applications submitted by 11:59 EST on the closing day will receive consideration.

Responsibilities

  • Perform regular tree maintenance activities such as pruning, removal, planting, transplanting, spraying, and cultivating.
  • Climb trees up to 120 feet or higher to perform required work.
  • Use complex climbing techniques, rope knots, and specialized climbing hardware safely and in accordance with industry standards.
  • Use rigging techniques and cranes as necessary.
  • Inspect, diagnose, and identify hazardous trees for annual condition assessment and determine corrective actions.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Direct Deposit and drug testing required.
  • Operate a motor vehicle; valid driver’s license and certified driving records required.
  • Maintain a current Class B (or higher) Commercial Driver’s License.
  • May be required to work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.

Qualifications

  • Ability to perform the work of the position without more than normal supervision.
  • Ability to interpret instructions and specifications.
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of materials and safety practices.
  • Dexterity and use of measuring instruments.

Physical Demands

Significant physical effort is required. Duties include climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials. Work often involves climbing trees at significant heights and handling ropes, chainsaws, and heavy tree limbs. The employee may be on their feet for prolonged periods.

Working Conditions

Work is outdoors in varying weather conditions. Exposure to insecticides, chemicals, and traffic hazards on park roadways is inherent. The employee must be able to operate vehicles and equipment in high‑speed traffic environments.
