Summary

Incumbent performs simple and routine work involved in the maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings and related utilities, requiring the use of a variety of trade practices associated with occupations such as carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, cement work, painting, and other related trades.

Duties

  • Performs simple and routine maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, equipment and related utilities.
  • Performs minor carpentry repairs using simple measures and hand tools on tasks such as replacing broken planks on picnic tables; replacing broken windows using precut stock; minor adjustments or replacing hinges, latches and catches.
  • Performs minor painting using brush and roller according to specific instructions on projects where appearances are not critical such as staining picnic tables and trash barrels.
  • Performs minor plumbing repairs such as tightening or replacing in‑kind fittings and fixtures that do not require custom fitting or solder joints; replacing faucet washers; unplugs drains using a plunger; replaces liquid petroleum gas bottles.
  • Operates a light truck to pick up supplies and to transport materials to and from work sites while assisting on project work.
  • Operates a forklift to load and unload supplies and light equipment not requiring special rigging.

Conditions of Employment

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • May be required to complete training and operate a four‑wheel drive vehicle.
  • Required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards.
  • May be required to work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • Will be considered emergency/essential personnel.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old or at least 16 years old and:
    • Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or
    • Have completed a formal vocational training program; or
    • Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or
    • Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part‑time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Qualifications

  • Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. (SCREEN OUT)
  • Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc.
  • Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)
  • Use of measuring instruments
  • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading)
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment
  • Knowledge of materials

Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid state or District of Columbia driver's license.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part‑time hours are prorated. Experience listed as full‑time will be credited at 40 hours per week.

Volunteer Experience

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience through National Service programs such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps and other organizations.

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

Additional Information

This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.

Defined season dates: March‑December.

Non‑Competitive Rehire Eligibility

Temporary seasonal employees can maintain non‑competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of less than 1,040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service within their established service year.

If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment of less than 1,040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply.

Employment Termination

Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.

Physical Demands

Works from ladders, scaffolds and platforms. Tasks may require standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds.

Working Conditions

Work is performed inside and outside where dirt, spray and fumes are present. Work may be required in inclement weather and/or while wearing protective equipment and clothing that can be heavy and uncomfortable.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are NOT suitable for telework.
