Position Summary
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Camp Specialist will assist in implementing, planning, organizing, and administering a comprehensive enrichment program for children. By following YMCA of the USA guidelines and association policies, they ensure the well-being of each participant. A central responsibility is creating a program suitable for campers of different ages and abilities by organizing various camp programs in their assigned specialty.
Essential Functions
- Models the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
- Develops and maintains positive relationships with individuals and groups at all levels of the organization; supporting members connect with each other and the YMCA.
- Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures; completes related reports as required.
- Assist in developing and implementing special programs as assigned by the Program Director.
- Ensure the enjoyment and safety of an assigned group of children by supervising them and being aware of safety and medical issues to prevent accidents.
- Maintain all records for the group, including attendance and camper assignments to Specialists. Communicate with parents as necessary.
- Attend and actively participate in staff training, orientation, and monthly camp staff meetings.
- Collaborate with other staff members to develop a comprehensive recreational and educational program for each session.
- Assist with supervising the lunch period, ensuring that each camper eats a proper lunch and drinks enough fluids to prevent dehydration and heat‑related illnesses.
- Complete accident reports for injuries or illnesses requiring first aid and submit them to the Child Care Director. Discuss incidents with parents and obtain their signature on the form.
- Maintain a professional demeanor, including personal appearance, speech, and interactions with campers, their families, and other staff members.
- Ensure the cleanliness and organization of the camp area, including indoor rooms, outdoor play spaces, gym, and gymnasium closet space.
- Carries out any additional duties assigned by the Supervisor, demonstrating flexibility and a willingness to contribute to the overall success of our programs.
- Knows, follows, and enforces all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, procedures, and staff expectations, including those for the prevention of child abuse.
- Ambassador of all YMCA programs with a focus on department offerings and member engagement.
- Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed. Clean and store equipment per branch procedures.
- Attends all mandatory meetings and trainings.
- Is willing to step up, even if outside of the position description, to contribute to the overall success of the YMCA.

Requirements
Experience, Education, and Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Previous experience working with children preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written organizational and communication skills are essential to this position's success.
- This brings to this position maturity, responsibility, and a sincere interest in working with people.
- Possess a general knowledge and understanding of the YMCA, its goals, and its mission.
- Knowledge of various resources for programming ideas and the skills to utilize that information in program implementation.
- Knowledge of age-appropriate activities and expectations of school age children
Trainings & Certifications
- Must complete annual safety, combating sexual-harassment, and child abuse prevention trainings assigned by human resources prior to direct service.
- Must have current CPR and First Aid.

This job operates in a recreational and/or educational environment. This role routinely uses standard recreation and/or office equipment. At times, employees may be exposed to undesirable working conditions, communicable infectious diseases, and risk of injury from others. All employees are required to always follow the preventative health policies of the YMCA. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to high.
