Job Description
The Public Works Department seeks an experienced Equipment Operator who is technically competent, detail‑ and solution‑oriented, and possesses a great attitude. The incumbent will operate a variety of light and heavy‑duty construction equipment—including pick‑up trucks, street sweepers, dump trucks, sewer cleaning equipment, cranes, skip loaders, front‑end loaders, heavy and light tapping machines, jack hammers, concrete saws, pipe‑locating equipment, leak‑locating equipment, cement mixers, valve trucks, and threading machines. The operator will also perform maintenance and repair work on streets, sidewalks, and water distribution systems, handle access, drainage, and vehicle sight‑distance requirements, and support storm‑drain and water‑system operations.
Responsibilities
- Operate light and heavy‑duty construction equipment safely and efficiently.
- Perform maintenance and repair work on streets, sidewalks, water distribution systems, and associated utilities.
- Remove damaged paving, compact, fill, repave, and repair paved surfaces with asphalt, concrete, brick, and interlocking pavers.
- Remove weeds, trim plant growth, and maintain visibility and safety along rights‑of‑way.
- Assist with storm‑drain system maintenance by removing debris from gutters, manholes, and culverts.
- Conduct flagging or other traffic control during maintenance projects and emergencies.
- Install, modify, and repair water‑supply piping, valves, and appurtenances, as well as meter boxes and lids.
- Construct, maintain, and repair concrete block, concrete, or wooden structures, fences, gates, and other public‑works infrastructure.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
- Four years of experience in maintenance and construction work, including two years operating heavy equipment.
- Completion of twelfth‑grade education with journey‑level training in equipment operation.
- Possession of or ability to obtain, within one year, a valid Class “A” driver’s license.
- Possession of or ability to obtain, within one year, a public‑works certificate or a State water‑distribution operator Grade II certificate.
- Knowledge of diesel and gasoline heavy and light equipment operations, public‑works maintenance programs, safety practices, and record‑keeping principles.
- Skill to use a wide range of hand and power tools, perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, and operate a motor vehicle safely.
- Ability to make minor repairs, perform preventive maintenance, resolve problems, work independently, follow oral and written instructions, communicate clearly, and foster positive relationships.
- Physical capability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, crawl, twist, climb, and lift up to 100 lb, and tolerate exposure to cold, heat, vibration, chemicals, and loud noises.
- Availability for on‑call, stand‑by, and emergency duties.
