Equipment Operator Join to apply for the Equipment Operator role at Pocatello Fire Department.

The position is a journey level role operating light and medium equipment and performing maintenance duties for Street Operations or the Water Department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Operate power tools and light/medium equipment, including but not limited to backhoes, loaders, compactors, dump trucks with trailers, sweepers, camera vans, equipment transport vehicles, and snow plows.

Perform flagging and traffic control duties at work sites.

Perform basic maintenance on vehicles and equipment.

Carry out all work duties in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Street Department tasks:

Maintain and repair city streets, storm drain systems, and levees (patch holes, seal cracks, prepare surfaces for sealing).

Maintain levee systems by cutting trees, clearing brush, and cleaning head gates and debris basins.

Clear storm drain lines, spillways, and debris grates using jet trucks and related equipment.

Transport materials such as hot asphalt, chips, backfill, sand, and gravel to repair sites.

Perform snow and ice control by pre‑treating with brine, and removing snow/ice via plowing, sanding, and de‑icing.

Train to operate all equipment used by the Department.

Water Department tasks:

Assist plumbers with installation, maintenance, and repair of water lines, service lines, hydrants, and valves.

Install water meters, perform live main line taps, flush lines, and backfill, compact, and patch utility cuts.

Transport backfill materials to repair sites.

Perform snow and ice removal on city streets and sidewalks.

Assist with pulling pumps and cleaning water storage tanks.

Train other employees on equipment operation.

Maintain a collaborative and cooperative working relationship with elected and appointed officials, other City employees, other organizations, and the general public.

Work in a public street environment with exposure to adverse weather, trench excavation, traffic hazards, moving vehicles, and heavy equipment. Noise levels are moderate with occasional exposure to loud equipment.

Respond to emergency situations (on‑call position).

Immediate response personnel must live thirty minutes or less from their usual daily work site.

Qualifications and Requirements

High school diploma or GED.

Class A CDL with specified endorsements.

Flagging certification.

CPR and First Aid certification.

Class I Drinking Water Distribution Operator certification (Water Department).

Two (2) years of light and medium equipment experience is preferred.

Ability to maintain collaborative and cooperative relationships.
