Mission

Provide a safe statewide transportation system that promotes efficient movement of people and goods, supports economic competitiveness, prioritizes the environment and preserves quality of life.

Responsibilities

  • Operate large equipment (road graders, sewer cleaners, hydraulic excavators, etc.) upon receipt of CDL instruction permit or license.
  • Perform minor maintenance: check/add fluids, adjust brakes, maintain tire air pressure, clean and wash equipment.
  • Assist in repair of operated equipment.
  • Coordinate, participate in, and direct crew maintenance activities; select materials, supplies, and equipment; inspect, plan workloads, workflows, deadlines, and time utilization.
  • Maintain records of operation; prepare daily paperwork such as crew activity reports and vehicle checklists.
  • Perform independent manual labor incidental to job assignments.
  • Conduct temporary traffic control (Maintenance of Traffic).
  • Perform rough carpentry, masonry, painting, and assist in assembly and erection of highway signs.
  • Train crew members in operation of heavy equipment and basic Temporary Traffic Control.

  • Mathematical calculations.

  • Procedures, techniques, and use of equipment for maintenance and repair of highways/bridges.
  • Operating hand and power tools.
  • Operating and performing minor maintenance on large equipment.
  • Completing job‑related reports and forms.
  • Clear verbal and written communication following instructions.
  • Operate heavy equipment and train others.
  • Read and understand job‑related materials.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Lift, carry, and handle up to 50 lbs; stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl, bend frequently.
  • Work outdoors in various weather, terrains, heights, or high‑volume traffic.
  • Stand for extended periods.

Additional Job‑Related Requirements

  • Must respond to emergencies and be on‑call (24‑hour duty) when necessary.
  • Operate a commercial motor vehicle consistent with CDL class required.
  • Class “B” CDL required at hire. Obtain Class “A” instructional permit within 60 days, and Class “A” license within 10 months.
  • Obtain and maintain Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) – Intermediate Level certification within one year.
  • Work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two years of experience operating small/medium equipment and vehicles.
  • Class “B” CDL with air brakes at hire.
  • Valid Class B driver license with acceptable driving record per Department’s policy.

Driver Record Requirements

  • Three or more moving violations in the past three years accumulating three or more points per violation.
  • Two convictions of reckless driving in the past three years.
  • Suspension or revocation of driver license for moving violations in the past three years.
  • Suspension or revocation for refusing a sobriety test, or a DUI conviction, in the past four years.
