Job Summary Join FDOT and be part of a team that works together to improve safety, enhance mobility, and inspire innovation in the Florida transportation system.

Key Responsibilities Coordinates, participates, and directs the maintenance activity of the chemical herbicide program and/or the assembly and erection of highway signs as needed. Assists in selecting materials, supplies, and equipment; inspects, plans workloads, workflows, deadlines, work objectives, and time utilization with employees. Maintains records of operation. Prepares and maintains daily paperwork such as crew activity reports and daily vehicle check lists.

Operates vehicles and a variety of medium and heavy equipment upon receipt of the required CDL Instructional permit or license. Performs preventative maintenance and pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections on equipment operated; performs light maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; checks and adds fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc.

Performs manual labor in the maintenance of highways, bridges, and other highway facilities while utilizing a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools.

Motivates crew members to improve the quality of work performed and assists in the evaluation of others. Communicates on a regular basis with employees both individually and in crew meetings. Trains crew members in basic Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic). Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Mathematical calculations.

Standard safety rules and procedures.

The procedures, techniques, and use of medium/heavy equipment in the maintenance and repair of highways, bridges, and/or other highway structures.

Crew leading principles and practices.

Operating a variety of hand and power tools.

Operating and performing minor maintenance on medium/heavy equipment and vehicles.

Filling out reports and forms and maintaining accurate records.

Communicating both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.

Train others.

Read and understand job‑related materials.

Develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds.

Stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis.

Work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.

Stand for an extended period of time.

Work independently and make job‑related decisions.

Other Job‑Related Requirements

Must respond to emergencies and be “on‑call” (24‑hour duty) when necessary.

Must be readily available to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) in accordance with the type of Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required.

Obtain and maintain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) – Intermediate Level.

Will work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.

Possess a valid Class “E” driver’s license and obtain a Class “B” CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment, then obtain a valid Class “B” CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency.

One year of experience in infrastructure construction or maintenance is a substitute for a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency.

Class E driver’s license required at time of hire; CDL Class “B” License Instructional Permit within 60 days and CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months.

Driving Record Requirements

Three (3) or more moving violations in the past three (3) years that accumulate three (3) or more points per violation.

Any two (2) convictions of reckless driving in the past three (3) years.

A suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three (3) years.

A suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction in the past four (4) years.

Drug Screening Mandatory drug screening will be performed on the successful applicant.

Compensation Salary: $40,902.97 – $52,933.25 per year. A Competitive Area Differential (CAD) additive of $561.60 will be added to the annual salary.
