Position Purpose

The Accounting Manager is an essential part of the financial management team, responsible for overseeing and directing accounting functions, including general ledger, prepaid, fixed asset, and ATM accounting. Prepares periodic reports, reviews and reconciles data, and participates in the development of specialized financial data. Oversees and prepares entries and adjustments to records, files, and statements. Assists with financial and variance analysis and budget preparation. Assists in providing management with information necessary for decision‑making. Responsible for the training and development of department personnel. Reporting to the VP, Finance, this position also supervises several positions within the accounting area.

Essential Functions and Basic Duties

Service

  • Assumes responsibility for supporting, demonstrating, and promoting the Credit Union SERVICE culture. Support, Educate, Respect, Value, Innovate, Communicate, Empower. Consistently demonstrates a commitment to the Credit Union’s principles of equity and belonging, by modeling inclusive behaviors, proactively managing bias and supporting JHFCU’s diverse employee base and membership.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the effective and timely performance of all Accounting Department functions.
  • Ensures that accounting functions and duties are accurately and promptly completed by established deadlines.
  • Prepares journal entries and balances work in more complicated accounting areas.
  • Assists in the budget cycle as needed.
  • Oversees reconciliation and quality control of year‑end tax reporting.
  • Oversees the balancing of various subsidiary ledgers such as ATM, Fixed Assets and Prepaids, etc.
  • Oversees the balancing of various subsidiary ledgers to processor reports.
  • Researches and resolves accounting errors and discrepancies.
  • Reviews and maintains reporting to various agencies such as Unclaimed Property and the IRS.
  • Identifies and implements process improvements to improve department productivity and efficiency.
  • Ensures that accounting functions are completed in accordance with established procedures, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and applicable regulations.

Leadership

  • Manages a team of Accounting professionals, including but not limited to conducting regular touch bases and coaching, provides career development opportunities, completes annual performance review processes, and participates in the growth of the team.
  • Promotes and maintains a commitment to our management system including regular touch bases, coaching, and ongoing action planning.
  • Prioritizes team engagement through the development of trust, effective communication, providing timely feedback, and ensuring accountability for goals, projects, and operations.
  • Provides reporting for areas of responsibility. Leverages data to measure and report on key metrics, providing insights for data‑driven decision‑making.

Other Duties

  • Remains compliant with applicable laws and regulations, including but not limited to BSA and the USA Patriot Act.
  • Responsible for any additional duties and/or responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Education / Certification and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting and a minimum of five (5) years previous accounting experience.
  • At least two (2) years supervisory experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Work experience should cover a broad range of accounting areas and also show a progression of increasing responsibility.
  • Must have experience with month‑end close processes, interpretation and implementation of accounting standards, financial statement preparation and variance analysis.
  • A thorough knowledge of financial and accounting practices and procedures.
  • An understanding of Credit Union operations is preferred.

Required Knowledge

  • Technical knowledge of accounting concepts, practices, procedures, and financial reports.
  • Understanding of related regulations, statutes, and filing requirements.
  • Knowledge of related computer applications.

This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule. The ability to work a hybrid position is based on work performance and ability to create and maintain engaging work relationships.
