Job Description and Duties

Under the direct supervision of the Community Resources Manager, the Native American Spiritual Leader interviews and counsels incarcerated persons on ethical and moral problems and spiritual matters; prepares and conducts Native American religious services, to include ceremonial sweats, drum ceremonies, and POW WOWS. The Native American Spiritual Leader organizes and instructs classes in Native American religious/cultural teachings, religion, ethics, and sacred music; cooperates with other staff members in carrying out the institution programs; supervises the arranging of programs conducted in the institution by visiting religious groups; visits the sick; counsels with families on problems involved in rehabilitation. The Native American Spiritual Leader explains and interprets the institution’s religious program to community groups; serves, when designated as a member or consultant to the institution’s classification committee and does other work as required.

Individuals who are eligible for a Training and Development assignment may also be considered for this position(s).

Possession of Minimum Qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment. Applicants who completed their education outside of the US (with foreign degrees/transcripts) must obtain and submit verification of U.S. course/degree equivalency. Foreign education credential evaluation services can be found at NACES | National Association of Credential Evaluation Services.

Candidates new to CDCR/CCHCS are required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan Fingerprinting, as well as a Tuberculosis test/evaluation prior to appointment, followed by department annual Tuberculosis testing/evaluation thereafter.
