Senior Security Architect / Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA) Engineer Location: Bethesda, MD (Hybrid – 3 days onsite)

An organization supporting a major federal research environment is seeking a

Senior Security Architect / Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA) Engineer

to lead the design and implementation of advanced security architectures. This role requires a hands-on architect who can translate Zero Trust principles into practical, scalable solutions while aligning with federal security standards.

Role Overview This position focuses on developing and executing a Zero Trust Architecture strategy for a large, cloud-enabled federal environment. The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise with strong architectural vision and understands both high-level security concepts and real-world engineering execution.

Key Responsibilities

Design and evolve enterprise security architecture to protect sensitive data in compliance with federal laws and standards

Develop and implement Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA) strategies aligned with federal guidance and maturity models

Create implementation roadmaps to address ZTA pillar requirements across service areas

Identify security capability gaps and evaluate new technologies to meet ZTA requirements

Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to align ZTA implementation with broader IT roadmaps

Track ZTA implementation progress and maturity to ensure delivery within defined timelines

Develop and communicate cloud data security policies related to data handling, storage, and access

Research and evaluate advanced security technologies, including AI-driven threat detection and behavioral analytics

Provide architectural guidance that supports engineers and administrators implementing security controls

Technical Environment

Cloud platforms: AWS, Azure, GCP

SIEM and analytics: Splunk (dashboard development required)

Identity and access management: CyberArk, SailPoint

Endpoint and vulnerability tools: FireEye HX, Tenable

Data protection and infrastructure: Symantec DLP, NetApp

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience)

8+ years of cybersecurity experience with a strong focus on security engineering and architecture

Demonstrated experience developing Zero Trust Architecture solutions for federal environments

Deep knowledge of cloud security architecture, administration, and design

Strong understanding of threat modeling, risk assessment, and incident response

Proven analytical and problem-solving skills

Ability to work independently while collaborating with diverse technical teams
