Learn About a Day in the Life of a Medical Assistant
Provides superior patient care and performs administrative and delegated clinical tasks that support patients in a clinic‑based environment as part of a care team led by the physician and/or advanced practice provider.
Enters, maintains, and reports all medical history, medical coding, and file claims using an Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
Patient visit support that may include greeting patients, escorting patients to exam rooms, taking vital signs, and collecting medical information to support the reason for the visit and recommended treatment.
Sterilizes and prepares medical instruments; ensures exam rooms are disinfected, orderly, and ready; provides patients with privacy, comfort, safety, and hygiene.
Assists in maintaining inventory and stocking supplies, instruments, and equipment for all exam rooms; maintains appropriate paperwork for inventory control and reviews orders for completeness.
Addresses and requests referrals and other insurance authorizations in addition to passing along patient information for prescription, x‑ray or lab requisitions to necessary parties (calls to pharmacies, hospitals, labs).
Job Requirements
High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Basic Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and Microsoft Office knowledge.
Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) required within 14 days of start.
Preferred Job Requirements
Associate’s degree.
Graduate from an accredited medical assistant/medical technologist school/program or three years of MA experience.
Current national certification as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA).
