Job Description:
The Monitor Technician is responsible for effectively monitoring patients on Central Station Telemetry in Mixed Acuity and/or Critical Care Units. This employee reports cardiac and/or vital sign changes to the nursing staff and escalates concerns, as needed. The employee primarily monitors adult and geriatric and occasionally adolescent patients. Maintains accurate records and ensures coverage of monitors; may perform EKGs, as needed. Ensures proper cleaning and storage of telemetry equipment.
Essential Functions:
Detects and identifies cardiac dysrhythmias and/or life-threatening arrhythmias and promptly communicates this information to the charge nurse and/or nurse assigned to patient
Reports malfunctioning equipment immediately
Maintains accurate records of telemetry strips
Maintains accurate records of communications with nursing staff, leadership, etc.
Ensures coverage of monitors at all times
Performs EKGs where applicable
Maintains cleaning protocol for telemetry units and is accountable for proper storage and inventory of telemetry equipment
Other Functions:
Maintains compliance with all company policies, procedures and standards of conduct
Complies with HIPAA privacy and security requirements to maintain confidentiality at all times
Performs other duties as assigned

Education:
High school diploma or GED/Equivalent (required)
Experience:
Previous hospital patient care experience (preferred)
Certification:
Basic Life Support (BLS) accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) (required)

Understanding and awareness of policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
Applies proper and professional communication skills between personnel within the department and to other departments
Presents a personable and professional attitude to physicians, patients, families, visitors, and co-worker

Knowledge of cardiac rhythms
Ability to work well with others, serve others, help others, lead others, and take directions from others in the interest of moving process and programs forward to the desired outcome
Able to multi-task and is able to perform work in a neat, efficient, well-coordinated, well communicated manner with a high degree of accuracy and professionalism
Language Ability:
Must be able to communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to analyze and recognize abnormalities in patient heart readings
Ability to think through issues and identify appropriate options
Computer Skills:
Ability to utilize EMR and Microsoft Office Suite effectively
