Job Description And Duties Transportation Engineers perform engineering duties throughout North Region Division of Project Development and Construction. Based on annual workload, delivery commitments, and seasonal needs, the incumbent may be assigned by the Department to a variety of positions in an office or field environment. In Project Development, the incumbent will be under the direct supervision of a Branch Chief or a Senior Transportation Engineer. In Construction, the incumbent will be under the direct supervision of an Area Construction Engineer, a Senior Transportation Engineer, in a field environment during the Construction season (typically late Spring through early Fall, as necessary to complete assigned tasks). In either environment, the incumbent will perform various transportation engineering tasks of average difficulty accomplished through understanding and applying Caltrans standards, manuals, guidelines, policies, directives and computer software applications.

Eligibility for hire Candidates are required to review the Minimum Qualifications (MQs) for this classification. If you meet MQs under Pattern II and require the TE Civil in‑person written hurdle exam, DO NOT TAKE the TE Civil online exam prior to passing the written hurdle. Candidates who take the TE Civil online exam prior to passing the written hurdle may negatively impact their hiring eligibility. Special Requirements

Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.

Travel is required.

Appointment to Range D requires a valid Professional Engineering License (Civil) issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers. For all other ranges, a PE license is not required.
