Job Description And Duties Under the supervision of the Branch Chief, a Senior Bridge Engineer, the incumbent is responsible for performing field engineering investigations per 23 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 650 Subpart C National Bridge Inspection Standards for some of the 25,500 in‑service highway bridges on the State and Local highway networks statewide and reporting the results of those investigations in comprehensive written engineering reports. The incumbent will be required to develop inspection plans. The incumbent may be required to work outside normal working days and hours to respond to emergency situations involving bridges, assess the structural condition and direct field crews in the repair and stabilization activities of damaged bridges.

Desired qualifications for the incumbent include registration as a Civil Engineer in California.

Eligibility and Examination Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Transportation Engineer (Civil) exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Special Requirements

Appointment to Range D requires a valid Professional Engineering License (Civil) issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers. For all other ranges, a PE license is not required.

Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state‑owned or leased vehicle.

Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) In order to apply for this position, you must submit a Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) highlighting your education, training, and applicable experience that qualifies you for this position in addition to the standard application form. A resume cannot be submitted in lieu of the SOQ. The SOQ should be typed in Century Gothic, 11‑point font, no more than 2 pages in length, and address the following topics (include each topic as a heading):

Describe your Civil Engineering Maintenance, Design, and/or Construction experience and duration. Emphasis should be placed on Bridge experience (where applicable), specifically Bridge Maintenance.

Describe your Bridge Inspection experience and duration, if applicable.

Summarize any applicable licenses/certifications you possess, including but not limited to, Professional Engineer license, Engineer in Training (EIT) certification.

Summarize any Bridge Maintenance/Inspection training courses you’ve completed and/or certifications you possess. Emphasis should be placed on National Highway Institute courses (example: Safety Inspection of In‑Service Bridges, Fracture Critical Techniques for Steel Bridges, Bridge Inspection Refresher, etc.), where applicable.

Describe how your education, training, experience, and skill set meet the criteria in the duty statement and qualify you for this position.

Possession of Minimum Qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment. If you are basing your eligibility on education, you must include your unofficial transcript(s)/diploma for verification. Unofficial, original, or official sealed transcripts will be accepted and may be required upon appointment. Applicants with foreign transcripts/degrees must provide a transcript/degree U.S. equivalency report evaluation that indicates the number of units and degree to which the foreign coursework is equivalent.
