The Medical‑Surgical Renal Registered Nurse (RN)

provides specialized care to patients in the medical‑surgical unit who are experiencing renal conditions. This role combines the dynamic, broad responsibilities of a med‑surg nurse with the advanced expertise needed to manage kidney‑related health issues. The Med‑Surg Renal RN oversees patient care from admission through discharge, addressing both acute and chronic renal concerns. Key responsibilities include conducting comprehensive assessments, developing personalized care plans, and implementing complex interventions. Success requires a compassionate, skilled nursing professional who thrives in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment and is committed to enhancing patient outcomes and experiences.

Responsibilities

Conduct thorough initial assessments and ongoing evaluations of patients’ physical, emotional, and mental health.

Monitor vital signs, intake/output, and other clinical indicators to detect changes in patient conditions.

Monitor vital signs, lab results, and symptom progression closely; safely administer prescribed medications (oral, IV, subcutaneous, intramuscular) and monitor for adverse effects or allergic reactions.

Function as a liaison between patients, families, and the healthcare team to ensure the patient’s needs are met.

Provide patient education on their condition, treatment options, and lifestyle adjustments to support recovery and prevent readmission.

Communicate effectively with doctors, specialists, physical therapists, and social workers to develop and adjust care plans.

Qualifications

Current and valid state RN License.

Current BLS certificate upon hire and maintenance of current status.

Additional Qualifications That Are a Plus

Current ACLS certificate within 30 days upon hire and maintenance of current status.

Previous acute care hospital experience.

Ventilator management experience.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
