Position/Program Information
The County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works is hiring a Construction Inspector for an open competitive job opportunity. Examination number C-4195-N. The application filing period began Tuesday, April 18, 2017 and will remain open until the service needs are met.
Essential Job Functions A Construction Inspector is responsible for inspecting permitted activities in the public and flood control district rights of way to ensure compliance with permits, approved plans and code requirements. The Inspector performs continuous inspections, calculates locations, grades and depths of utilities, monitors testing of materials, documents progress, and reports variations and discrepancies. The Inspector with departments, external agencies and the public, attends safety meetings, maintains accurate reports, and complies with Department driving policies.
Minimum Requirements One year of experience in the supervision or inspection of engineering construction work, including reading and interpreting complex construction blueprints and making calculations. A valid California Class C Driver License is required. Driving record verification will be conducted; applicants with four or more moving violations in the last two years will not be appointed.
License All successful applicants will be subject to driving record verification before appointment. Driver license must not be suspended, restricted, or revoked.
Physical Class Physical Class III – moderate. Includes standing or walking most of the time, bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; lifting objects up to 25 pounds and frequent lifting of 10–25 pounds.
Special Requirement Information
Engineering construction work includes horizontal construction such as roads, bridges, flood control facilities, utilities, and related engineering structures.
Examination Content The examination consists of two parts:
Part I – qualifying written test covering basic mathematics, reading comprehension and ability to read and interpret complex construction blueprints. A passing score of 70% or higher is required to proceed to Part II.
Part II – interview weighted 100% evaluating experience, personal fitness and general ability to perform the duties of the position. A passing score of 70% or higher on each weighted part is required to be placed on the eligible register.
Eligibility Information Eligible register names will be placed in order of score groups for a 12‑month period following promulgation. No person may compete more than once every 12 months. Applications will be processed on an as‑received basis.
