Unit Manager - Dining Services, University Housing Responsible for the coordination and execution of a complex or multi‑unit department. This core member of the management drives the quality and positive customer service experience of our University of Illinois campus customers as well as our team members. Supervisors will engage and implement University Housing's diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

Duties & Responsibilities

Schedule and hold regular individual meetings with staff to discuss their performance, address concerns, and provide guidance for improvement. Offer timely and constructive feedback to help staff understand their performance and how they can improve.

Assists in planning and implementing overall policies, procedures, objectives, and methods in alignment with the mission, vision, and strategic plans of Illinois.

Recruiting, hiring, training, and scheduling staff to ensure adequate coverage and efficient service. This also includes conducting performance evaluations and managing any disciplinary actions.

Review operational reports, managing budgets, controlling costs, and optimizing expenses. This involves monitoring financial reports, occupancy reports, and maintaining inventory.

Organize and lead training sessions and workshops aimed at enhancing staff skills and knowledge.

Overseeing the day‑to‑day operations of the dining programs, ensuring smooth service, and maintaining high standards of food quality and safety.

Develops and maintains a good public relations program in relation to students, guests, and other University personnel to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction by addressing complaints, improving service quality and maintaining an inclusive and welcoming environment.

Assists in organizational development; participates in planning future installations; and studies and recommends plans, staff, and equipment needs.

Makes recommendations as to most efficient use of personnel.

Prepares unit master work schedules in relation to budget and operational requirements.

Plans sound safety and proper maintenance programs.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Additional Physical Demands The position involves work in a kitchen area which is heated by ovens and stoves. Position involves work in an industrial kitchen where there is some discomfort in low temperature areas (-10 degrees F) and/or high temperature areas (90 degrees F). There is risk involved when working with dangerous machinery, wet floors, and exposure to open flames. Light lifting, remaining in a stationary position for long periods and moving throughout the dining units is involved.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

Any one or combination totaling six (6) years (72 months) from the categories below:

Coursework in business, dietetics, culinary arts, food science, nutrition, hospitality, hotel, catering, restaurant, or institutional management, or a closely related field as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:

30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)

Associate’s Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)

90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)

Bachelor's Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)

Food service management work experience.

Preferred Qualifications Computer and planning experience

Appointment Information This is a 100% full‑time Civil Service 0038 - Food Service Administrator III position, appointed on a 12‑month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the posting close date of 1/9/26. The budgeted salary range for this position is $51,831 to $61,000.

Fully‑onsite — This position will be expected to work at the University of Illinois Urbana‑Champaign campus on a full‑time basis per the University’s Workplace Flexibility policy.
