Job Summary Wellstar is seeking an innovative and mission-oriented Executive Director, Market Communications, to lead the Market Communications team and serve as liaison between Wellstar corporate communications, External Affairs, corporate executives and market leadership. Reporting to the VP, Organizational Communication, this creative communicator and relationship builder identifies new ways to engage and inspire market‑based team members and align communication strategies with corporate and market leader priorities in patient care, innovation, and community impact. This role ensures creative, strategic collaboration between corporate and regional External Affairs teams, including Community Development, Marketing, Patient and Team Member Experience, and Foundation.
Core Responsibilities & Essential Functions
Strategic Communications & Innovation
Lead a team of communicators assigned to support local market presidents and leadership teams in the communities Wellstar serves.
Serve as a strategic communications advisor to local market presidents and leadership teams.
Collaborate with Marketing, Government Relations, Strategic Community Development, and the Wellstar Foundation on integrated public affairs strategies in the markets Wellstar serves.
Collaborate with External Communications to support local market business initiatives and develop issue‑management strategies.
Constantly strive for excellence, innovating multi‑channel communication strategies that engage team members and convey the Wellstar mission and exceptional care delivery.
Leverage emerging technologies and platforms to modernize communication approaches, including digital storytelling, social media campaigns, and engagement tools.
Lead hospital‑leadership and team‑member feedback sessions to improve communication relevance and impact.
Collaborate with Market Communications team to incorporate feedback and insight into communications strategies tailored to each market’s needs.
Internal Communications
Oversee the development of tailored internal communication plans for Wellstar’s major markets and facilities.
Encourage innovation in local communication strategies and replicate successes across the system.
Oversee communication strategies that keep market‑based team members informed, engaged, and aligned with organizational values, innovation initiatives, clinical developments, career growth and benefits, as well as other critical information.
Ensure alignment between System communications and market‑level communications to support team members and maintain focus on safe, quality patient care.
Ensure alignment between market‑level communications and corporate and External Affairs messaging, including internal and external communications, social media, government relations, marketing, IT, emergency preparedness, human resources, and wellness.
Ensure consistent and compelling brand messaging that maintains Wellstar brand identity across all communication platforms and touchpoints.
Serve as liaison between Market Communications team and Wellstar creative team to ensure efficient and timely production of high‑visibility collateral that aligns with Wellstar brand identity.
Ensure Market Communications team supports respective hospital presidents and market leadership teams in communicating System priorities, including Great Place to Work survey, performance goals and management, employee engagement and gratitude, holiday messages, construction planning, leadership transitions, etc.
Performance Measurement & Improvement
Track communication effectiveness using analytics and KPIs; regularly report on progress and recommend refinements.
Other duties: performs other duties as assigned, complies with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
Required Minimum Education
Bachelors in Communications Studies/Speech Communication and Rhetoric (Preferred) or Bachelors in Other
Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s) All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.
Additional License(s) and Certification(s) Required Minimum Experience
Minimum 10 years of corporate/organizational communications experience in developing and managing communication strategies.
Minimum 10 years of people management experience.
Required Minimum Skills
Strategic thinker who can offer actionable recommendations to improve market share, community presence, and overall reputation and effectively partner with the System to design and implement those plans.
High: Excellent written, verbal, and visual communication and editing/proofreading skills with attention to tone, accessibility, and cultural relevance.
High: Proven success in multi‑stakeholder collaboration, community development initiatives, or regional partnerships.
High: Experience in media relations, crisis communication, and fundraising communications.
Medium: Proficiency with digital tools, such as social media platforms, email marketing systems, and analytics dashboards.
High: Understanding of community health principles, public health messaging, and health literacy.
Medium: Familiarity with HIPAA and healthcare‑related communication standards.
Low: Community‑driven mindset with a commitment to equity, inclusion, and social impact.
Medium: Creative problem solver and proactive collaborator.
High: Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt in a fast‑paced, mission‑driven environment.
