Healthy Families Virginia Beach at the Virginia Beach Dept of Public Health is an affiliate of Healthy Families America. Healthy Families America is the signature home visiting program of Prevent Child Abuse America, the nation’s oldest and largest organization committed to preventing child abuse and neglect before it happens. Responsibilities

The Family Resource Support Specialist (FRSS) is responsible for initiating and maintaining regular and long-term (up to five years) contact and support with families. This activity will occur primarily within the family’s home; each visit should last for at least one hour. Virtual visits may take place as needed. The interventions should be family-centered, strength-based, and directed at establishing a trusting relationship; strengthening the parent-child relationship; promoting healthy childhood growth and development; and enhancing family well-being by reducing risk and building protective factors. Activities may also include but are not limited to: Administering the Family Resilience and Opportunities for Growth Scale (FROG) Scale Administering screening tools such as the ASQ, ASQ-SE, Depression Screens, etc. Identifying and referring families for other supportive services, including health care services. Assess families’ eligibility and needs for the Healthy Families America Program services offered through the City of Virginia Beach Department of Public Health. Assist in the development of an appropriate service plan. Use an array of motivational interviewing techniques to assist the family. Conduct comprehensive intake assessment utilizing the program approved tool (Family Resource and Opportunities for Growth Scale) and refer families to appropriate programs dependent upon eligibility. Provide resources and/or referral services to expectant and new parents to address the needs of the family and work toward reducing risk factors identified. Conduct family home visits on a regularly assigned schedule with the goal of establishing a trusting relationship in accordance with Healthy Families America Best Practice Standards. Prepare appropriate activities for home visits using approved evidence-based curriculum and other supplemental materials. Conduct timely screenings as recommended by Healthy Families America guidelines to include Ages and Stages Questionnaire 3 (ASQ-3), Ages and Stages Questionnaire – Social Emotional 2 (ASQ-SE-2), Parent-Child Interaction scales, Intimate Partner Violence screening, Depression screening, and other necessary screening tools as determined by the program. Develop knowledge of community resources to make appropriate referrals for family and participate in required training to further develop knowledge and skills. Attend appropriate meetings and/or conferences to present cases, receive supervision, receive ongoing training for inter-rater reliability of the assessment tool and analyze services provided.
