MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME ACADEMY
Responsible for oversight of maintenance activities and assessment of conditions for the Palm Beach Port location with equipment assets requiring maintenance. Ensures compliance to all standards, maintenance policies and procedures for all freight handling equipment to include but not limited to mobile harbor cranes, straddle carriers and reachstackers. Provides consultation services and direction to heavy equipment mechanics to ensure the equipment is available for maximum use and is in safe and operable conditions.
Prepares maintenance budgets and assists with administering capital/refurbishment budgets. Manages exempt and nonexempt employees.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities Conducts the following: On-site equipment evaluation, safe-operating practices, consistent application of repair and maintenance procedures, maintenance reporting.
Implements new maintenance procedures and ensures the proper use of all procedures.
Coordinates timely, efficient and cost-effective equipment maintenance, repairs or refurbishment.
Provides support and input to maintain uptime, safety, and compliance to standards.
Communicates with Outport Maintenance Manager regarding equipment repairs, maintenance, environmental and safety concerns, cost control, uptime, service failures and other issues with equipment.
Provides advise and collaborate on equipment acquisitions and repositioning, labor, and resources to improve cost and operational efficiency.
Evaluates labor needs, workload, productivity, repair and maintenance requirements against developed cost and flat rates.
Coordinates with internal or external resources to implement agreed upon course of action and ensures sufficient availability of spare parts and supply flow.
Ensures maintenance and repairs are performed in facilities that allow for safety and security of personnel and property.
Coordinates training courses, outside seminars or formal training programs for maintenance personnel.
Assists with Job Safety Assessment creations and directly responsible for their implementation as well as ensuring they and any related procedures are followed.
Conducts safety incident investigations, completes documentation and any related follow ups.
Assists with negotiating service contracts with service providers.
Ensures compliance with Company ethics policy and standards.
Prepares and assists in the preparation of capital and operational budgets, follow capital projects and operating expenses, scrutinizes financial statements for accuracy.
Provides maintenance activity reports to management, including: Monthly Productivity Report, Uptime Report, Repair & Maintenance, and Cost Initiatives.
Liasons with outside vendors and service providers to benchmark Company’s operational Stays abreast of industry, safety and environmental regulations that affect or govern equipment operations and maintenance.
Performs all other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education, Certification, Experience and Physical Requirements Education and experience minimums can be substituted with any equivalent combination of training and experience.
Education Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or in a related field preffered.
Experience Minimum 5 years in the heavy equipment maintenance and management field. Knowledge of freight/container handling equipment is preferred.
License Valid local Driver’s License and ability to obtain a valid U.S. Passport.
Travel 10% Travel to various Company locations.
Physical Operations – Manual dexterity to perform repetitive motion tasks on computer or handheld devices. Ability to frequently twist, bend, reach, squat, kneel, climb on equipment, push/pull 50 pounds, crawl, lift and carry at least 80 pounds on a daily basis. Able to withstand exposure to extreme weather conditions.
Ability to travel in various modes of transportation (e.g. automobile, airplane, train etc.) Occasionally exposed to outside elements during the course of the daily workday and during traveling.

Performs preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and repairs on support and heavy freight moving equipment systems: mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical.
Performs preventative maintenance on all heavy equipment including but not limited to: mobile harbor cranes, straddle carriers, reach stackers, rotators and spreaders.
Performs major and minor repairs to heavy equipment as needed.
Operates, inspects and troubleshoots mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical failures on equipment as required and diagnose defects.
Tests mechanical products and equipment after repair or assembly to ensure proper performance and compliance with manufacturers’ specifications.
Dismantles and reassembles heavy equipment using hoists, rigging equipment and hand tools.
Researches parts needed for repairs on equipment by using parts manuals and supply books.
Rebuilds engines, transmissions and their components as necessary.
Makes service calls to various Tropical departments both domestic and international to facilitate equipment repairs as required.
Remains on standby duty during ship loading after hours and on weekends.
Fills out work orders after every job.
Orders parts required to conduct repair and maintenance and follow-up.
Coordinates with the effected departments equipment repairs and services.
Makes quality fabrications as needed.
Keeps work area clean and organized.
Participates in training seminars and workshops when necessary.
Performs all other duties as required.
