S&T Customer Support Chemist, Expert
PPG Industries, Inc. seeks an S&T Customer Support Chemist, Expert in our Oak Creek, WI coatings plant, supporting the research and development of proprietary paint coating products for PPG’s Automotive Coatings business.
Responsibilities
Provide technical/chemical expertise on plant batch manufacturing, including quality control and advising on batch technical consults.
Conduct paint property and raw material testing and reformulate existing paint coatings products with alternate raw materials as required.
Direct technical activities to recover distressed assets (painting products & raw materials) to avoid disposal loss.
Execute technical support projects through root cause investigations, troubleshooting, and performance testing of new coating products.
Support customers and field representatives with solutions for color, application, and other property adjustments, including reformulation of existing products.
Perform chemical research experiments to troubleshoot production problems related to automotive coatings, including color matching, coating development, and sample analyses.
Lead multiple projects and teams.
Qualifications Must have a bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field plus five (5) years of progressive post‑baccalaureate experience in a related chemist position.
Experience must include five (5) years in each of the following areas:
Solvent and water‑based coatings formulations
Polymer coatings chemistries
Automated spray applications of coatings
Root cause analysis
Process improvement and cycle time reduction
Knowledge of coatings and raw materials and their performance attributes is required, including:
Primers for substrate protection and performance
Topcoats/monocoats chemistries, including polyurethane and acrylic/polyester melamine coatings
Preparation of panel test series, conducting specification testing for customers, and results analysis
Pigment and/or raw material replacement qualifications
Experience can be concurrent.
