The employee in this position will serve as Resident Engineer in a Division 5 Construction Office and be responsible for contract administration of major construction projects & the supervision of 20-30 DOT and CEI Engineering Technicians. This position requires proficiency in plan reading, highway engineering calculations, and familiarity in the operation of survey instruments necessary to stake out line and grade for roadways and structures. Other duties include the preparation of monthly estimates, final estimates, and other record keeping required during the life of a contract construction project. This position requires daily communications with contractors and subordinate personnel to ensure compliance with contract plans, standards, and specifications.
The successful applicant should have experience in communicating well with the public, municipalities, professional service providers, and other department units. Possess communication and supervisory skills necessary to supervise and train other employees. Possess the ability to deal with the general public and other units in a positive manner.**Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences**Salary Grade and Salary Range:
NC22 / $73,093.00 - $142,538.00**Management prefers applicants with the following:*** Knowledge of contract administration to ensure projects are constructed in accordance with the department’s specifications, standard drawings and policies* Experience in performing engineering analysis on complex contract administration issues, and the timely approval/denial of these issues through supplemental agreements and claims* Experience in the supervision of construction engineering inspection personnel to meet department goals* Customer service experience related to resolving problems that involve explaining engineering concepts to various customer groups* Experience in the management of multiple projects and directing multiple work crewsAdditional Expectations:Ability to frequently speak to public groups and the news media.
Able to make inspections in various types of weather and terrain on projects assigned to Division 5.
Must be available as necessary to manage staff 7 days per week, 24 hours a day.
Time will be split between office and field approximately 50/50.
This position will work Division wide.
Ability to work outside in various types of weather, terrain, and hours. Employee must be able to lift 50 lbs.
Preference given to applicants who are registered Professional Engineers.
Employee must be able to legally operate a motor vehicle.
