This position is responsible for performing a wide variety of preventive and emergency maintenance tasks for the Utilities Division of the Public Works Department, which includes the sanitary sewer collection system, storm water conveyance system, water treatment plant, water production system and water distribution system. The incumbent will also perform other duties as assigned for the Utilities Division and other City departments.

Performs with proficiency the preventive and emergency tasks for the Utilities Division.

Maintains all operating and maintenance records with accuracy, clarity and completeness.

Performs with proficiency scheduled maintenance of the Utilities Systems. Maintains records and schedules. Reports all abnormal conditions or blockages.

Performs with proficiency the Utilities Division vehicles and equipment.

Performs with proficiency the operations and maintenance of a wide variety of equipment, control systems, and vehicles relating to utility operations.

Performs all operation and maintenance activities for the Wastewater Division; employees are continually cross trained within the Utilities Department which includes both the Utilities Division and Wastewater Division.

Performs with proficiency maintenance and construction tasks including but not limited to carpentry, plumbing, welding, masonry, and other duties as assigned or required.

Performs with proficiency and minimal supervision weekend monitoring and reporting at the Utilities and Waste Water Treatment Plant facilities as assigned. Carries an on-call phone and responds to emergency call outs.

Performs with proficiency lab work, including, but not limited to, sampling, performance of standard tests, and record keeping as required or delegated. Recognize abnormalities in results as they relate to the operation and maintenance of the facility, and discuss them with the supervisor.

Proper and safe use and maintenance of any assigned City or Utilities Division vehicles, equipment, property, etc. Observe and practice safe work habits. Attend and maintain all division training and safety requirements to be legal, safe, and compliant with laws and regulations.

Effectively coordinate activities with other public works staff. Actively participates and promotes all utilities division activities, duties, meetings, training sessions, etc. as a team member.

Assists the Street and Parks Department with snow plowing operation including plowing, salting, sanding, shoveling, etc.

Assists city departments, divisions, and outside agencies as directed. Functions as a team member with all city employees, and effectively interacts with all levels of City personnel.

Represents the department to civic and other organizations with a positive promotion of the department.

Follow and disseminate all orders and instructions of the Utilities Supervisor, Utilities Manager and Public Works Director.

Complies with all legal requirements of the job. Adheres to all City and utility division policies and procedures and requirements.

Qualifications

High School degree or equivalent.

Excellent driving record.

Possession of or ability to obtain a valid class “B” State of Minnesota Commercial Driver’s License with tanker and air brakes endorsements within six months of hire.

One to two years’ experience in construction, equipment repair, and or equipment operation.

Must obtain Minnesota Class “D” Water Operator Certificate within 2 years of employment.

Windows based computer application software experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference given to post-secondary education including vocational or trade school courses and/or three years progressively responsible experience in performing a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and repair tasks specific to water and/or wastewater operations.

Fluency in Spanish and English including reading, speaking, listening and writing.

Regular 40 hours per week. Regular hours are Monday – Friday from 7:30 to 4:00. Position will require flexibility in future scheduling to include any hours at the employer’s discretion for appropriate coverage and efficiency. Must work overtime as assigned; may include days, evenings, nights, weekends, including holidays for emergency situations. Timely reporting to work with a minimum of absences. Ineligible for hybrid telecommuting work.
