The Population Health Division provides core public health services: health protection, health promotion, disease and injury prevention, and disaster preparedness and response.
Job Description Under direction, the inspector conducts inspections of housing, industrial plants and premises, solid waste facilities and vehicles, noise sources, food facilities, and public health and safety hazards to enforce laws, ordinances and regulations, recommend actions, issue citations, prepare reports, implement programs, and perform related duties.
Essential Duties
Enforce health, housing, planning, and air pollution codes, State health and safety regulations, and local ordinances.
Investigate complaints, abate violations, coordinate with city departments, appear as witness, and testify in court.
Conduct complaint inspections of dwellings, hotels, apartments, and commercial buildings; assess sanitation, maintenance, safety, and code compliance; make follow‑up inspections and recommendations for condemnation or vacation.
Inspect noise sources, issue violations, recommend corrective action, and prepare cases for the Variance Board.
Inspect food and drink establishments, detect violations, order corrections, advise operators, obtain product samples, and conduct foodborne illness investigations; appear at hearings and prepare related notices.
Conduct miscellaneous inspections (laundry, ambulatory homes, animal boarding, refuse removal disputes, infestations, mosquito complaints, swimming pool plans, water supply permits, backflow prevention).
Perform other special duties as required (sanitation surveys, hazardous materials sampling, recreational water facilities, reclaimed waters, meetings, and educational conferences).
Qualifications
Licensed or qualified as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) issued by the State of California Department of Public Health Services.
Valid California driver’s license.
Applicants must clearly state how they meet the minimum qualifications and may be required to submit verification.
Only applicants certified in California qualify. Include your California REHS number with your application or upload a copy of your certificate.
Selection Procedures Training and Experience Evaluation (Weight: 100 %). Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will complete a training and experience evaluation to assess knowledge, skills, and abilities. A passing score places applicants on the confidential eligible list for up to 12 months.
